Default Electornics

Well,
I think I have my choices isolated for a new GPS and sounder, but wanted to check and see what all of you have to say.
Magellan FX324 MAP Color for the gps
Garmin 240 blue for the sounder.
Any feedabck, warnings, support or comments? They will be greatly appreciated. I would also appreciate any places that sell these reasonably!

One point to consider is the very favorable response to Garmin BlueChart from other salties. You apparantly get more chart for less money, and you have a lot of flexibility if you use the CD.

I would go with 2 units from the same manufacturer. once you get familiar with how one operates the other just falls in line, mostly because the manuf. get one user interface down and run with that type until they better the product line or phase it out.

Thats my .02

Garmin's blue charts are pretty cool.

The Magellan looks great. I just read a review on that model and it seems to be packed with everything you need.

I was just telling Gregotis to look at that same model. Gregotis, if you're out there, this is the one for you too!

I'd go with Furuno Navnet with color display. In fact that's what I did. I'd do it again. Maybe mono instead of color to save a few bucks.

Is there a Garmin that has a number pad on it? I have discovered that the menu drives drive me to distraction. This is the big draw to the Magellan.
Thanks for all the feedback so far!

WP,

Glad you mentioned the numeric keypad, that's probably the greatest feature you can have with a GPS, at least IMO. If I hear people throwing coordinates around over the radio I don't need to scramble to find a pen/paper to write them down, just type them in as fast as they can read them.

Good luck.

Great input, guys! You just kept me from making a $1000 mistake.

Numeric pad, check!

They both work good as long as you have a clear shot above them .The external antenna give you more options for mounting .
