What to do if tuna do not come within 100 miles:
1. Go fishing anyway and every time you catch a black rock fish pretend that it is a peanut.
2. Go fishing anyway and every time you catch a ling cod pretend that it is a green water hog.
3. Go fishing anyway and every time you catch a halibut pretend that it is a bluefin or bigeye.
4. If you want to save money, stay home and sit in your boat and pretend your tuna fishing.
5. If you have a friend that is as desperate as you are, repeat item 4 above but invite them over.
6. Drink a lot of beer while repeating items 4 or 5 to have more fun.
7.
Any other ideas?

Get the dog harness out and a racquetball. Set the drag light hook up to the dog with your favorite trolling rig, toss ball and hold one. Introduce a cat and see if you can winch that dog back in in low gear - repeat till your arm hurts.

Did that once as when I was 5 with my dog, and I didn't take the hooks out. FYI, not a good idea.

Fair warning, I tried this and was cited, please read the regulations very carefully. ODOT requires and strictly enforces that all Road Sign Fishing Tackle be Barbless!

Fat Cat, 120 miles is easy in that boat of yours. You have the range and the size. I have the range but boat sized challenged at 26'.
Oh the pain, the pain...........

Re: What to do if tuna do not come within 100 miles:
First lets address the wrongness of this thought process-Hey its like posting what if gas cost 5$ per gallon-so the nature of the question is wrong. That said with 166 gallon tank-I'd pack a little more and go the distance at least once if the window was there to support that trip. The question I have do you think we will see some sleds out past 60 miles this year?? Mark

Hey fatdad, way back when was last year, '07!!!
Make firends with someone that has a big boat, i.e., go from being captain to being crew.
Worst case, find a charter that carries two captains (so they can do a multiday trip) and lots of ice!
I wonder if there is a researcher somewhere that tracks the divorce rate of sportsfishers when the tuna don't come within a 100 miles. I bet I'm not the only grumpy sportsfisher in Oregon!!! Oh, wait, I just remembeed, I'm already divorced!

Re: What to do if tuna do not come within 100 miles:
They are already within 100 miles. The commercial boats are getting 500 fish days at the 126 line (@ 80 miles) so it should not be much longer. Patience Grasshoppers. On the other hand this would not be a good year to fence sit. If there is a window and you are able to safely cover the distance you might not want to sit at home and wait for the weekend.

Someone did not go far enough...all that way and we stopped short of the 126 line...but I guess we saved 30 gallons not going out there.

Re: What to do if tuna do not come within 100 miles:
This thread is BS.
It would be more productive asking "what do I do if the fish don't come within my boats range?"
Several fish have been boated well inside of 100 miles, just not a lot yet.
I would suggest that if you are in need of a TUNA fix and your boat doesn't have the range that you start looking to crew on a boat that does have the range, there are several in the fleet these days.
BTW, you don't have to have a Grady to catch TUNA in 2008.

I am calm. Didn't mean to sound upset. Was just trying to make a point that there is more than one way to get your TUNA fix. This years fishing is late and different than the last 7. True addicts should be looking outside the normal box this year.

How's this for out da box? How about 10 boats get together and hire a barge with a sling loader. Load up 10 boats on the barge and have the barge run out 100 miles and drop them off. I wonder how much it would cost.

Purchase one of the trawl buy back boats for use as a mother ship, give it some TLC, put in a few bunks, fuel tank for gasoline, ice machine and outfit it with 3-4 skiffs.

7. If you want to save money, stay home and sit in your boat and pretend your fighting a tuna , with a beer in one hand and a rod with a pretend tuna on with the other hand.

Re: What to do if tuna do not come within 100 miles:
Hire a tied up traller that doesn't have any salmon left to fish for like Walter suggested. Drag a few smaller boats out there and spend a few days.
OR, be like Bernie and take up tole painting and line dancing.

Bernie, it isnt your boat that is to small that keeps you from getting to where the tuna are
