Is there a cannery near by?
If by some factor of luck, i end up getting into a bunch of tuna this summer out of Depoe, can i trade fresh fish for canned nearby? Am i going to have trouble taking care of a bunch fresh fish? Do you all vacu-seal fresh and freeze. Will someone be able(willing) to help me ? id. p.

Re: Is there a cannery near by?
I think most of us can our Tuna in jars with a pressure cooker.
If you have one you can do this in camp.
I don't know about trading for cans but if anyone here does you will too in short order.
I hope you have that problem to worry about.
Maybe we can all get together for a can fest this summer. Kind of a pot luck can and drink beer in camp kind of thing? Anyone?

Another part to the same question. I can keep a Salmon or Trout good for a week on ice , is tuna the same ? Is tuna tougher to keep fresh? id. p.

I'd rather do it myself. That way I know that what I'm eating has been well taken care of.

Re: Is there a cannery near by?
There's a place in Garibaldi that trades canned for fresh ... or
you can carc the tuna and they'll can YOUR fish for you for a buck
or so a can. The trade deal works out to be something like 1/2 lb.
canned for 1 lb. of fillet. I know a couple of guys at Pacific City use
this service and have been pleased.
Don't know the name of the place ... anybody?

Re: Is there a cannery near by?
There are three canneries still in existence on the South Coast. Sportsmens Cannery in Winchester Bay, Chucks Cannery in Charleston, and All American in Brookings.
Sportmens Cannery has a website.
http://www.sportsmenscannery.com/
I think Chucks has one too.
http://www.charlestonmarina.com/visitor.htm
Both Chucks and Sportsmens will trade or can your own fish to your specs. They can can sturgeon, salmon, shad, crab and tuna. Chucks and Sportmens are a short drive from the central coast about the same time as to Garabaldi from Newport.

I would love to can my own (as keta mentioned) but i fear ill be hurting for the free time during summer fishing trips. Ill keep those names in mind... thanks much. id. p.

Re: Is there a cannery near by?
I've used the cannery at Ilwaco ( the one that is painted red ) for salmon and sturgeon. We use it when there are quite a few of guys from out of town that want an easy way to enjoy the fish all year, or more. As I remember it, it is not inexpensive, just convenient.
I will have to ask them about trading tuna for cans. On a big haul that would sure be nice.
I have tried their canned tuna and it is tasty. We canned, in cans, a big batch this year. The darn cans are hard to find and they are kinda pricy. They sure make great gifts.
