Default Many Thanks to a Salty Dog:

After getting skunked for two days sturgeon fishing in Astoria, I swear I've lost my fishing mojo. I decided to head home on Saturday afternoon at about 4:00pm. I made a last minute decision as I was on the highway to head to Garibaldi instead. I made it to Arch Cape and traffic was at a dead stop.....for the next 2hrs because of a head on collision between a motorhome and a car. I finally get going again and nearly make it another ten miles when my boat trailer rear axle breaks loose...my rear left side leaf spring blows apart and the tire siezes up sideways and takes out my fender, twisting it up against the bottom of my boat. I drag the mess to the nearest pull off....no cell service of course. So I take a look at the damage and start to get to work figuring out how to piece the thing back together so I can get to the next town when I see a black dodge truck towing a real nice striper pass by. Not more than 3 minutes later that same rig is pulling in behind me and out comes two gentlemen to lend me a hand!! We put our heads together and came up with a solution and thankfully I had just about everything I needed to scab that axle back together. Ended up taking one of my guide bunk brackets off to utilize the bracket plates and bolts, a chunk of 4x4 post that I use for a tire chalk became my new leaf spring, a motorcycle ratchet tie down held the axle to the block and in less than 40 minutes or so we had my axle "McGyver'd" up and I was back on the road! I ended up driving all the way home to Aloha on that repair job.....at a much reduced speed of course
(sorry if you were unlucky enough to get stuck behind me Saturday night on Hwy 6, I did my best to pull over whenever I could safely do so). The total trip from Warrenton to home was nearly 8 hours and that was after spending 12 hours on the water! I was beat, to say the least but thankful to get the boat home.

So thank you again fellow Ifisher "Tracker" and your partner Peter. You two
saved me an expensive tow bill not to mention an additional trip back to the coast to pick up the boat after necessary repairs. I'll pay it forward...you can be assured of that! Just another example of the kind of great folks you'll find on this website...and another reason why I'm glad to be a member of it.

Thanks again, Mike

Tracker - you're way to nice to take so much crap from the rest of the ifishers. Way to go amigo, doing the right thing is so easy, but so rarely done.

Tundra you talk about paying it forward. Last year I had trailer trouble going to Illwaco and someone stopped and helped me. Then Bernie and Bob got me a slip for the week till my trailer was fixed. ............... I left Garibaldi early one morning before dark and hit some nasty water just outside the jaws. We were ok and waited till light to come back across and there waiting to lead me was Tuna Time. Cant tell you how good that felt in both cases to just have someone there to look at the problem with me and help me out.
To have kept going down that road having left you there would have been a slap in the face of all the Salty Dogs who have given me help when I need it.

Nice to know that there are salty dogs out there willing to lend a hand. Considering how far tracker was from home, and the drive he had ahead of him, it would have been so much easier to let the nexy guy help. Thanks for the note Tundra, and glad you made it home safe. Maybe some good mojo rubbed off and you should try your luck again. Like Dan said Tracker, your way too nice a guy to take some of the grief you do!

I had to patch my trailer together like this last summer. Broken down, side of the road, and no Tracker to be seen. I tried to get a tow, no tow dollys available for 24 hours. Boat on the trailer to tall to put on a flatbed. Ultimately did this same fix and nursed it home, like Tundra said, VERY slow.

That's so cool Dave, and great of you to post Mike. Hey Dave, I think that deserves a week in Cabo more than catching some tuna on a flat ocean. I'll talk to John and Milt and see if they wouldn't mind giving the prize to you buddy!!

Keep the trip.. You made the trek and deserve it!

I have to say that this is not the first time I have seen this fix used on a trailer. Years ago in baja we had the whole axle on an utility trailer break loose from the bed. Both sides. The bed of the trailer stayed there on the axle till we made it into the desert off HWY 1. We drove to Gerrero Negro to look for a mechanico! Well we talked to one guy and he said he could fix it. All he wanted was a case of beer and for us to fill his gas tank. Gas maybe 75 cents at the time. So we agreed and for the next hour we followed him around while he gathered three other friends and stopped at various garbage dumps along the way gathering bits of this and bits of that. Soon down the road we went. They were following us. By the time we got to the trailer they had drank all the beer and were obviously drunk. But in no time at all they had fixed the trailer and we were on our way home. That fix lasted for a few months till my friend sold the trailer for parts. They used old rope, duck tape, bailing wire and any manner of pieces of wood and the fix was something to see. I have used that fix now three times and my son just told me he used it up near Prudhoe Bay this week on some tourist trailer. Sure wish we had taken a picture. Thanks for all the comments guys.
