Re: Crab Davit System!?
Englund Marine also has them, manual or electric in Newport or Astoria. Fairly simple installation (manual) and easy to put away.

Re: Crab Davit System!?
The Cushman folks (that fishplay mentioned) are great. They just came out with a davit that attaches to a Scotty downrigger swivel bracket (less drill holes). This is brand new and not on the website. This comes as manual or motorized. The manual is $120 for the arm and $30 for the pulley. They say they have tested this to 285 lbs. HJ

Re: Crab Davit System!?
I have a 3 1/2 HP gas puller that I bought from McKay shrimp gear in Quilicene WA. several years ago. It is similar to the ones Cushman has that Fishplay posted about. Unless I crab in 100' of water I usually do not use the motor. When we shrimped in 400 feet of water, the motor was a necessity.
It is certainly easy pulling when you can lean/sit on the far side of the boat and pull the rope straight at you chest high while your partner captures the pot as it comes to the surface. Lots easier on the side of the boat too.
The Cushman folks are very helpful. Good luck.

Re: Crab Davit System!?
I have the Cushman electric puller. It's quiet and powerful and does a good job. I use it for crabbing and shrimping. No complaints.

Re: Crab Davit System!?
Do you guys ever have a problem with your pots banging into the side of your boat with these systems? I have never used them, but the arms don't seem to extend out very far. Sorry for the stupid question.

Re: Crab Davit System!?
You have to attend the puller pretty closely as the pot is coming up. Once it clears the water, you just hoist it over the side.
You can drape a rubber floor pad over the side to protect the boat if it gets away from you.

Re: Crab Davit System!?
Put some Ironwood or Apatong (sp) on the side of your boat. I don't know if he'll have the time to do it but my brother has buily many sport and commercial davits. His shop is in W. Salem and he isn't a pirate.

Re: Crab Davit System!?
Keta is a very worldy person. Apatong.... Remember it well. In the old days when it was a cheap equivalent to expensive Philipine Mahagony, pallets used to be made out of it. Now it is an expensive hardwood. Used to use it to fix the beds in old pickups like a 53 Chevy split window. It was a poorman's teak. Played hell on your hands if you got a splinter.

Re: Crab Davit System!?
Must be one helluva fish whacker. Like Ironwood, apatong is the most dense wood I've ever worked with. Dulls saw blades in one pass.
It makes great truck beds. Used to replace the oak beds that they used as oem stuff. The apatong beds never rotted out. Like teak it has a nice smell to it.

Re: Crab Davit System!?
We used it to line the face of pilings and it took a lot of abuse. I had pieces of it that were 10" thick 20" wide and 30' long in the scrap pile. Worth many $1000's. I wish I had some of it now.

Re: Crab Davit System!?
There is a small fabricator of boat equipment at the end of the Garibaldi dock area. They are located in the blue building at the extreme south end of the area near the Estuary building. The owner is Joe Gerga and the design is such that the davit hangs off center to allow for the rope to remain in the pully. A great design IMHO. Joe fabricates many types of aluminium and does a very good job.
