SST -- West Coast North Region

This may be why the fish are not coming close. Huge band of cold water seperating us from a bloodbath............looks like the Westport boys may be in the money.............

Not encouraging, is it? Obviously that's a rhetorical question, the answer is clearly no unless you own a huge amount of stock in an oil company or maybe a gas station on the coast!

Marty, when I saw that SST shot I just had to go down to Dock 1 and try and cheer up my poor boat. I looked over on Dock 2 and couldn't help but notice your boat needed some cheerin' up too. Just wanted you to know, I tried...

It's hard to believe that there could be 41 degree water (and perhaps even cooler under the cloud cover) out there! That is ridiculous kind of cold! That water had to of come from way down deep to stay that cold when it hit the surface. Major upwelling action!

I think there may be a boat or two running out of La Push Saturday. It looks to me that there should be fish at 125 30 X 47 30 by then. If the weather prediction holds, even a small tin boat could get bloody. Give this a few days:

Pretty depressing!! I had pulled the boat outta the water right before Newport OTC weekend when it got called off. I hated the thought of it sitting down there in all that cold water.

I have heard reports of ******* going out 250 miles and coming back in with a few handfuls................lets hope that there are enough fish east of the cold water to make a season for us on the inside. Remember the Blitz got almost 50 fish at 40 miles and so there has to be some concentrations of fish within range. If these N winds would just lay down for awhile.................

Jerry, thanks for forwarding some good thoughts toward dock #2. I will be down Fri and/or Sat for some butt fishing or if I am possessed enough maybe a run for some tuna............boy nothing like 2007

The last couple images today look kinda weird. I'm not sure that entire inside patch is cold water; it might be some cloud cover mixed in. I need to look at a satellite shot showing cloud cover for the same time period, to be sure. This is the shot right before the one Marty posted:

http://coastwatch.pfel.noaa.gov/cwbr...03_2050_n18_wn

BTW I'm just itching to hear a real report from Coos Bay.... straight out, 125 line.

And Brookings is looking interesting.

p.s. Marty, if you spell out the entire word "commercial" it won't get censored

I'm thinking you're correct Mark. Taking another of today's data files, look in the area of 42'52 x 128'40's. You have 45 degree water right next to 59 degree water. I find it really hard to believe there is THAT big of a jump in such a short distance, no matter how much I'd love to find a true temp break like that.

Try the cloud mask. It does not leave much usable info in the picture.

From years past there was often a persistant cloud bank over the warmer water. You could even see it in the distance when you ran out.

I wonder if that is the story here.

50.2 at stonewall up almost 1.5 in just the last few hours.

OK you guys, how about an honest to goodness fish report to brighten the mood?

Not second hand info. Not rumor mill. This is direct from the owner of a commercial TUNA boat (a lifelong family friend) to me on Sunday just after our trip out of Little Italy.

Report was that his boat came back full of tuna from 582 miles from Garibaldi off Medicino CA. I didn't calculate the area, somebody else can if they want to. He told me that on the way back from the grounds they were fishing they ran across solid concentrations of fish at the 127 line due west of Newport. They already had their 30 ton load, so they couldn't work the school, but they put enough gear in the water to determine that there was definitely a solid mass of fish in the area. They were done unloading, and heading back today or tomorrow to fish the area- 127 over 44 35.

Sooooo..... SST's can be what they are. We've heard reports of fish at the 126 line, and solid commercial numbers at the 127 line off of our fishing areas. Boats picked up fish at the 125 line in respectable sport numbers just past the 125 line out of Little Italy on Sunday. Fish are around. They generally are deep, and that water is cold.

My only point is don't get discouraged. I've canceled every tuna trip I had chartered so far this year due to weather and distance to fish, but that doesn't mean that a few days of good weather won't show fish in a reasonable distance pretty quick. If the warm, clear water that was found on Sunday moves in and South a little bit, more boats will be into tuna.

On the flip side... If we have the boats and ability to play this game, we're a lot more fortunate than most anglers, and we have to play the hand we're dealt.

Mendocino... (actually Cape Mendocino, south of Eureka about 40 miles)

"Medicino" is probably what you ask for when you're sick in Italy.

Thanks for the update Mikey!

Yeah Marky Mark, that's what I meant. Sometime spellcheck corrects it the WRONG way.

Mendocino was what I meant to type. Fat fingers after a run to Pendleton tonight.

I hear ya...it's late.... I wasn't meaning to be the "spelling cop" .

The more important distinction, for those who may not be familiar, is that the town of Mendocino is a long ways (south) of Cape Mendocino.

I knew you meant the cape, just like when a guy says "Blanco" he means the cape.

That area you mentioned Mike, sounds like the spot the "exploratory" boat discussed on the WFBO website. It was basically 350 miles straight out from the Cape Mendo / Eureka area.

Mark- Geez Mark, you're making this a little too easy on the folks. If you read Sportfishing Magazine you'll know that highly respected charter skippers say that structure is key to the early season albacore fishery off the west coast..... Offshore of Cape Mendocino there happens to be just a tad bit of structure........

The Microwave SST pretty well confirms what Nalu found out:

http://www.ssmi-data.com/idx/ion-p.e...style=relative

The 233 line is the 127 in our terms. There is a lot of 16.1C water out there where those commercials found them.

If we can get a few days with out the windmachine set at it highest setting, it will make a huge difference I just looked at the latest terrafin shot which was mostly cloudy, but scattered around the clouds was solid 56-57 degree water. Obviously we want warmer readings, but if you take into concideration that the cloud cover and the wind has really cooled the surface temp, I dont think were too far off. trying to be positive here. As someone said earlier, the fish spend most of there time down deep so who nows exactly what temp there at. If yo look at the currents there pushing the favorable way, but that cold wind istnt helping the surface temps.
Keep your head up. Alot of OUR brothers caught fish last sunday. THe fish are there. THE ocean has been horrible for most of us to run a long distance. Last year was truely epic. It got alot of people hooked on TUNA fishin. Now after a long winter and still waiting on warm water......
Just trying to add a positive note. "Patience Grasshopper"

yes, here's the image from the Coastwatch browser

I don't know how to make the image bigger, but that's from 7/19, 50-60 F

I just learned about this sensor from an ifish post, check it out..

http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=206989

last night I met friends at the dock in La Push who are traveling from St Helens to Barkley Sound, they said they encountered a pocket of water that metered 37 F north of Westport yesterday!!! they said their meter was NOT giving a false reading so that must have been a hell of an upwelling

Right now Stonewall is reporting a temp of over 1 degree warmer than yesterday at the same time. Difference, No wind. Granted its still cold, but it will warm up fast without the wind screaming.

Latest AMSR-E is suggesting 45 15 x 125 45. The warmest water is up to 17C denoted by the light magenta, so things are looking up.

That slightly darker red area at N45 W125 is 16C. 60.8 f, that will fish, especially along the edge on the east side of it. Can you get infrared Chlorophyll?

I haven't found any decent chlorophyll charts since 7/20. I'm in Lincoln City now and its only partly cloudy. Hopefully in the next day or two we'll have a good shot. The 7/20 chloro shot shows N45 W125:45 to be exceptional.

It is supposed to be mostly sunny Thursday at the coast, so keep up your hopes for a good chlorophyll shot.

There may be something off about this chart because if you look at 46 x 125 45, it says the temp is about 10 C or less, which is 50 F, or less. Yet, Buoy 46089, which is located at those coordinates is giving a water temperature of about 60. So, it makes no sense to me.

Personally I think there are more fish out there than the charts seem to indicate. The Stonewall popped up to 54 today and so things are warming up a little...............still tons of bait out there, just need a couple of butt-flat days and we will be able to see the jumpers and boils. Fish were easy in 2007........this year we will have to earn them.
