Default Quick CR Salmon report

Headed out Sunday with TOC and another buddy. Hit the bar early and was able to sneek out along the south jetty. It was pretty slow according to the radio and fish checker. We did well coming within a few feet of tagging out but Casper spit the hook. We probably would have been done by 10 if we weren't running some deep rods for nooks. The details:

Most fish came early on about 3 miles south and 2 miles EAST of the CR ~ 230ftwater 55 degrees.

5 of 6 fish boated were keepers with almost all coming on either cutplug or whole herring.

Caught one at 40ft but the rest were 15-25 ft deep.

No nooks all coho between 7-10lbs.

My Quck CR Salmon report is as follows:

10 -12 miles South of the jaws. 170ft of water. 1 - 22" silver, 1 - 25" silver. 2 lost at the boat and 4 drive bye's, 1 jack. Crossed the bar at 9:30am for late fishing. (Had to start late due to my young son wanted to go out and needed a little more beauty sleep. ) Headed in at 1pm.

Nice! I'd take those over six silvers!

I love fishing da' beach! I always want to go up there to catch kings but often get out voted by the skipper (my wife) for coho action. I didn't ask on this trip but next time look out, here comes a mutiny "Hard to starboard!!"!

PS I think you guys pulled out right in front of us at the ramp.

Any reports from the beach on the oregon side. either off the Iredale or off Gearhart. Going north has never been a favorite of mine due to the rougher water crossing the northside

Flatocean (boat slabhunter)

ps. Did well on coho south of the CR buoy. Again 1/2 hatchery and 1/2 wild and lots of drive-bys. Lost a good chinook that had the reel singing.
Plugged cut herring between 12 and 25 with divers and fish flash

I tried off the iredale in 25-50ft water. Nothin. Water was surprisingly cold at 49 degrees along the shore.

No kidding - going north on the max ebb is a bit like landing the shuttle. It's great and smooth once you get past the re-entry, or in our case once you get past the river rip. I ran south and then headed north once past 2. But, I watched boats cut just past 9 and then head north - looks like they did better. Not my recommendation, just my observation. It was VERY sporty until about the 16 line where the rip occurs.

Actually, I got a call that there were fish up there - I have to thank Tom Shipley (Good Idea) for the call. He had 4 nice kings on board when I got the call.

Congrats on getting in on those nooks. I remember fishing off the CR South Jetty as a kid back in the '70s. We would always trek a half mile or so out on the rocks from the parking lot and we rarely ever caught anything except dogfish and skates. One day we're coming back in and a couple guys are fishing just beyond the surf line right next to the parking lot. My jaw dropped when they held up 3 20+ lb kings.

On Sunday, I ran up near the Oregon beaches but the water was pretty cold (~48 degrees). Did you note the water temp on the WA side?

I did notice a few of the charters were coming in from south last Sunday. Looked like they were coming from Seaside or Tillamook head.

Between 10 and 12 miles south of the jetty. A decent bite was going on with silvers. 15 to 25 pulls deep.

Dean, We went back up there on Monday... Skunk! We did have one nice fish on and lost it at the boat. That was our only bite.

As the max ebb was an hour later I was able to slip around the tip with only 150 yds or so of that reentry you mentioned.

Your use of the words "Very sporty" for Sunday's conditions was an understatement.

I am leaving for Langara Island today to fish until Sunday so I will miss the tuna tournament. Seems like a lot of trash talking going on. I hope that the fishing is better than the talk.

Good luck... Talk to you soon.

To anyone unfamiliar with running north out of the CR...

AVOID PEACOCK SPIT!!! It is right off the tip of the North jetty and is literally a killer of many. Check your chart and plot your course well clear of this hazard. I used to work with a former MLB instructor who was on a 43'er that rolled there. He told me the story and it didn't sound fun. Also if you listen to the SAR recording in the Astoria marine museum the boat that goes down was on Peacock.

I just don't want anyone to read this thread and hang a right just past the jetty...

"trash talk" is all in good fun Tom. All between friends and it is all good. With fish far off and numbers low it will be anybodys game out there. Doubt there will be big scores but there should be some really nice fish brought in. Long trip out and back with a short time to fish. Hoping the weather stays as predicted and everyone gets a crack at the salt.

Have fun this weekend and hope you do well.

I should have added that caveat.

Bernie, I know it is all in good fun, I just couldn't resist the shot. Have fun and good luck to you too.
