Default Boat size on the Ocean

I am still pondering which boat to buy. Any suggestions on what would be the smallest size boat to put on the ocean. Im not talking Ill be out on a stormy day. Calm weather. If its too rough ill be staying in the bays.

I was thinking of the 16' Osprey. 33" depth. too light for Ocean going.

This is like asking what weapon you should take to a battle. The answer is one that's bigger than you opponent has at the moment right? You can take an 8 or 10 foot livingston a mile or two out of T-bay and catch hog chinook. I've seen guys do it (the one I will never forget was about 75 or 80 yrs old and by himself).
Right boat, right day - no problem.

Beyond 20' would be my suggestion. A 21+ will get you out on the majority of days. A 30+ makes those 3ft chop days bareable and get's you out in the slop if you're desperate to get in the salt. I couldn't tell you what a 40+ is like, I guess it would be similar to floating my house! Popeye?

As a person not curent owning a sea going boat I would say 22'-26' for a trailerable boat.
Freeboard and stability are more important than length.
