Anyone trying different measures to save $$$
Just curious if anybody has done anything to try and improve their fuel economy (on the Boat). I just put on a pair of stainless props to try and improve my numbers a little. Not sure what if any I will gain, After all I could of put 100 plus gallons of fuel in the boat insted. What about running slower speeds and trying to lighten the load any. I just don't see anything that stands out that will really make a difference. Guess you gotta Pay$ to Play!

fuel flow sender for me... Helps to optimize mileage..
Over 100+ miles of boatride, it can add up..

You can pick one up for under $200 and it will pay for itself quick....Few hundred rpm can make a big change in Gallons per hour or miles per hour.

Yeah, I've tied up a dock to the side of my boat and reduced fuel usage by 100%!!!
I put a trolling motor on last year and reduced my fuel usage by 1/2 to 2/3, depending on how much running around I do to find fish. I also run with a fuller boat- more wallets= more affordable. Fishing from a marina that is closer to the fish would help a lot, like Depoe Bay, La Push, etc.

Re: Anyone trying different measures to save $$$
For using the fuel flow meter, if you have the electronics that will take itnput form it, then you can get a mpg reading from your electronics. If your electronics don't support that, then if you are comfortable with numbers, specifically division, enough to make estimates, then divide your speed by the gph and the result is mpg. you don't have to be exact, the nearest tenth is good.
I've noticed there can be a significant difference in mpg, it varies quite a bit based on rpm, sea conditions, weight in the boat, and by how I trim the motor. If you are making a long run, either for halibut or tuna, it can make quite a difference in the fuel used on the trip.
Unfortunately my kicker won't push my boat fast enough to troll clones, that would really reduce fuel usuage. It does however push the boat fast enough to troll swimbaits and I often use the kicker when trying to get near or in front of the fish to cast swimbaits. There is a huge difference in fuel usuage between the 200 and the 15 when idiling or pushing the boat at 2 to 5 knots. Just before the boat planes up, about 10 or 11 knots for my boat, is the worst for fuel economy.

I'm sure my mpg would go up if I went on a diet.

I'm about to cut my fuel burn in half. From 12gph to 5 or 6 gph. Saying you have to "pay to play" is an understatment!

Re: Anyone trying different measures to save $$$
The Yamaha fuel management system is nice, but it's kinda depressing watching the gph while cruising. I guess the only thing to do is "assume the position" when fueling her up?. How big do they make Oars anyway?

Re: Anyone trying different measures to save $$$
I think I'm on to something here, so usually we fish 5 guys(or gals) plus Captain Prozac. If I were to get a bigger Boat and fish say 7-8 and spread the cost of Fuel and things out a little bit more?. Now why did'nt I think of this sooner!

I like this one
