This weekend
Who's heading into the brine this weekend? Weather is shaping up!
I am looking for a ride, if anyone has an open spot. I have gear, pots, bait, and gas money! No takers, and I think I am going to charter.

Re: This weekend
Kurt, what's it going to take to convert your yard ornament into a boat?
Can I help?

Re: This weekend
It's going to take a whole lotta money. I have an employee stock purchase plan that will pay me $6K at the end of this month, and that money is for boat repair. Nothin else to do in the meantime, so I might as well fish. If I don't get takers today, I am going to book a charter tomorrow, unless you want to spend some time getting Pilar back together Saturday.
My freezer is getting empty though. Need some fish. Do any charters do crab/bottomfish combo?

Re: This weekend
Kurt, yes I could use your help. It's going back together now and some of the fasteners are a 2 guy deal. Give me a call. I'm planning on an all day deal on Saturday. We should be able to get all the way through it except for the instrument panel.
I'll take care of your fishing jones as soon as the fishing machine is back in commision. I need some salt bad.
Oh and I have some Vacuum packed FB in the freezer if you want some.

Re: This weekend
Hey John,
I am willing to donate some time to get the Pilar back in the water. Like Kurt, I have a major fishing jones going. I know that some salt and fins will cure it well.
Give me a call.
Tom

Re: This weekend
Hey! Maybe you guys get it together on Saturday and take her out for a spin on Sunday? Hmmm... I could stand something crabby - as long as it isn't John!

Re: This weekend
Hey Kurt, It sounds like you're now busy Saturday, but if something changes you are welcome to join dad and I. We were planing to at least do some ocean crabbing out of T-bay. I really don't have any great bottom fish spots marked yet, but if you do we could make it a double dip. Let me know. Kasey

Re: This weekend
Sorry Kasey, I am committed to helping John.
For bottomfish out of T bay, head down to three arches. Plenty of bass down there and some nice lings in 60-100'+ of water SW of the rocks. You don't need numbers, just look around for schools of fish, make some long drifts, you will score. The spot is about 10 miles south of the jaws.
If I can get you general area numbers tomorrow, I will post them.

Re: This weekend
Kurt, what size (weight) of jig do you need there? I seems like I used 2-3 oz the time I was down there and it wasn't heavy enough.

HawgJaw
edit : Weights... 4 to 5 oz works in no wind and <100ft. Add weight for wind. 6 or 8 oz works up to 150ft. Again add weight for wind. I always have jigheads in 4, 6, 8, 12 and 20 oz. If you use the shrimp fly rigs you can change the cannonball at the bottom to whatever it takes. Use heavy gear because the lings can run to 25# and they are mean, reel stripping mother *******.
N45 27.386' by W124 01.233'
Offshore from 3 arch, seabass.
N45 27.671' by W124 00.478'
30 fathoms, seabass.
N45 27.440' by W123 59.559'
washrock at 3 arch, seabass.
Be careful with that last one. Drive towards the number from the SW it is right near the rocks.
And last but not least crab at
N45 33.530' by W123 57.732'
Again be careful. In big swells this will put you too close to the beach. Look for 35 to 40 foot water in this vicinity and you will do well. This is south of the South Jetty along the sand beach. The crabs are huge here and it only takes an hour to fill your pots.
One last bit of advice. Look long and hard at the weather before you trek 7 miles down to 3 arch. You may do well going there but have to buck the wind coming back. It is always easier running with the wind and can be murderous crashing into it on the way back. The last mile or two near Cape Mears is always much rougher than the rest of the trip. Also time your trip to return before or at high tide. Do not cross on the ebb.
You will find bass suspended all around the washrock near the large arch. Don't get too close to the rocks because the swell can do you in. Look on the finder for schools of fish 1/2 way down to the bottom. Drop your 3 shrimp fly rig to the bottom and jig. If that does not produce, crank up 1 ro 2 turns on the reel and jig. Repeat until bit. Then you set the fish and let him swim around to get a double or even a triple. If it gets real heavy and then becomes dead weight you got a Klingon ling cod.
Not hooked but too mean to let go of your seabass. Be ready with the net and get the ling before he breaks the water. If the ling hits the surface he will release your bass and all you get is 1/2 a bass and a fish story.
Sorry I stole your guide and I hope this makes up for it.
BTW if you see a charter circling and resetting on a spot, drive out there and catch him right when he resets. With the GPS all his fish will become yours. You can return at will and plunder that spot another day.
Good luck and tight lines.

Re: This weekend
Pilar-
Some pretty detailed info for a list. I didn't want to post anything that exact, since you showed me those spots, I figure they aren't mine to give away. You are one generous guy.
Go get em hawgjaw! Another good technique is herring or smelt on a mooching rig, I have banged many many lings in this general locale.

Re: This weekend
I have fished these rocks many times in the past. Ditto watching the weather for the bumpy ride back in and also for timing the bar.
One memorable day the Ling were suicidal. This is when the limit was 3 and there were three of us fishing with metal and rubber jigs. We really caught a lot of big ones on this day in shallow water. We had two to go and I had a nice one on. As I was reeling him up he suddenly got much heavier. It ended up being a 15 pounder in the mouth of a 25 pounder. A very cooperative way to fill the limit. Best of luck!
