Default Squid Vicious

My brother did some flirted with the Tuna drug in Cabo this last spring, while taking a break from fighting fish they found some Squid to pay with. The spent hours catching these guys, and there were some huge ones that they couldn't get on the boat. This was about the average.

Is that the fabled 'Humboldt Squid'?

You get those dudes on a squid jig right? I thought that only worked at night.

For humbolt squid in CA, we used 8 oz jig bars in chrome or white. When they were going, they would attack the gaff in the water. Terminal gear selection was not critical. Getting your catch in before the others ate it was.

This was all during the day.

Max size was about 30 pounds. What I see in the pic looks more like 50.

Oh, yeah, they eat like a tire. Good crab bait though.

WOW, there's gotta be a LOT of ink in one of those monsters! What a mess that could make.

these ate quite well. they caught about 30 some both bigger and smaller. a couple 8 footers snuck away after attacking some floats on the boat. and they did catch these jigging

my nephew got a face full of ink a couple times ....he's young...17

apparently these squid were feeding near the surface in the middle of the day. chasing small redish crab or shrimp (never got the full details) the boat captain said it is rare, 1 or 2 times a year they can find the squid doing like this.

I tried em all ways, slow cook, fast and short, beaten, marinated, they weren't good. Doesn't mean that they aren't edible, but I prefer the little guys. THere might be other giants that are tasty, but not Humbolts, at least not the ones that made it up to the coast off Norcal last El Nino.

They are easy to catch, and abundant, but there isn't a big commercial fishery, which tells me they arent that great.
