Default Getting ready to crab in Newport - location ideas?

We will be heading to Newport to spend 3 or 4 days crabbing on July28. We have usually crabbed from the piers - are they still closed? We need some input - do you have better luck crabbing from a boat in the bay?

If so, where is a good place to rent a boat? We rented a little tiny one at the Embaracado resort last year. Maybe something a little bigger

Boat will get you to more areas and better crabbing. I have not heard of any piers being closed. Charter office has boats for rent. 14' w/ a 9.9 is pretty much par for the course.

Someone had mentioned on this board that the commercial piers were being repaired so commercial boats we docked along the public piers.

I guess we will see - but a boat sounds better!

That was me! Only one small boat docked at Pt dock#1 as of today. I would focus on the S. pier if you don't mind crowds. Lots better than it was this time last year, and some are very good size. I'm boiling up a 1/2 dozen right now.

Have fun and good luck-May see you out there!

I would try at the end of the public dock. I would drag my sled down if I could afford it. last five times I was there it was off the chain. good luck

About a month ago when I was there.... I noticed some major changes to the marina... the little marina store next to the boat launch has moved across the parking lot, next to a new and improved bigger nicer launch... and the little marina store kind of grew up also... much nicer down there... and yes they still rent boats

We are planning to be in Newport the first of next week. Is the crabbing still going good there?

Crabbing will probably still be pretty fair. Some of the charters will do bay crab trips. I know some people here at the embarcadero have done ok. Up by the green tank and over by the OSU dock has treated them well.

Was there for 4 days last week and saw a lot of those little boats bringing limits in.
Most said they were by the gas tank just up from the marina.

OK. Here's our honey hole.

We have always crabbed by the OSU area and done fairly well. We seemed to be in the average with everybody else that came in. Nearly 2 weekends ago we were over there for the Newport leg of the OTC and we were blown out so we just crabbed the bay and enjoyed the weekend. We crabbed for 2 1/2 days and ended up with 49. Many were well off the measuring stick and many rock hard with barnacles.

Over on the North side by the old concrete boat/wall? and up towards the green can. We caught most of ours on the outgoing tide which has never happened to us but it wasn't a strong tide either. Anywhere from 15-50 feet from the concrete-docks-ships (I think the Blue Fox and another black one) and rocks seemed to be the ticket for us in about 24-39 feet of water.

We met some folks out there on Saturday evening that were crabbing with old elk meat and they hadn't seen hardly any crab. That was about 8:00 PM or so. We threw them 20 chicken drumsticks, told them to put 5 in each of their 4 pots and give that a shot. We saw them at the boat ramp at about 11:00 PM and they crabbed the same area as we did and they ended up with 17 if I recall correctly.

Good luck, Be safe and Enjoy.

Ron
