Here is the 7 day significant fire danger. http://nwccweb.us/content/products/fwx/guidance/dl.pdf
The fuels (wood) dryness levels are different this year. At lower elevations, they are drying at a rapid rate while at higher elevations there is still snowpack. It is odd that at higher there is still snow but we are at a preparedness level 4 (out of 5). We have reported many accounts of lightning striking trees that are exposed but the ground is covered in snow. Those normally burn themselves out though so that is not an issue, it is what is at the lower elevations that is the concern.
Since I work at a location that is on the news daily for wild land fires, no, I dont think this is *****. No matter what, someones feathers will be ruffled.

Re: Im tired of this fire danger stuff
I was out in the coast range and everything is still pretty green, we had a little sprinkle too. I guess it depends on location, but I kinda agree with you, they are becoming more cautious. Of coarse when resources are getting short because of other fires, that might be a wise thing.

Re: Im tired of this fire danger stuff
I feel your pain. Out here on the coast, fire wood cutting was shut down most of the winter due to snow in the mountains. I was finally able to get a permit, and due to personal things I had to do, I didn;t get to cut wood untill the final weekend before they shut down the woods. My wife and I cut four loads in two days. It was just cut, get it home to unload, and get another load. I generally split before leaving the woods, but I was just trying to get wood home. From what the Dept. of Forestery say's, they will reopen for wood cutting Sept. 30.

Re: Im tired of this fire danger stuff
If the greenies would allow proper harvest, management and thinning of the forests the fire danger would be significantly reduced. Until then this will continue to be a running joke, and a great loss of a use of OUR resource and access to the forests.

So you think forest fires can be prevented by increased logging? I will agree that a more aggressive thinning regiment needs to be done on reprod forests. But unless the government subsidizes the logging, profit is a main concern.
Blaming environmental groups is just plain ridiculous, if you want to lay blame, look no further than the federal governments 100 years of fire suppression, as a key player in todays fire prone forests.
Here's a little history lesson for ya.
1846 Yachina Fire 450,000 acres burned
1853 Nestucca Fire 320,000
1865 Silverton Fire 1,000,000 (Largest in Oregon history)
1868 Coos Fire 300,000
1933 Tillamook Fire 240,000
1939 " 190,000
1945 " 180,000
1951 " 32,700
2002 Biscuit Fire 499,750
2003 B&B Complex 90,000
So it looks like Oregon has been burning long before there were any greenies, or loggers.

add this to your list:
1987 Silver Fire 150,000 acres
This is some of the same area that burned again in 2002 in the Biscuit Fire. A lot was learned about forest ecology in those 2 fires.

Re: Im tired of this fire danger stuff
Hancock has a fire closure sign up at the Big Eddy gate for those who might want to know.
