GBS, The dolly is a good idea, but first replace
the caster and wheel on the jack with a caster that will use a 8" diameter steel wheel at least
2" wide. The steel wheel rolls a lot easier on
pavement than rubber. Trailer outfits should be
able to fix you up or Call Jon Negus Co. on Sandy
Blvd. 503-234-8515 they will probably save you a
buck or two.

I have the same problem and am in the process of solving the problem. I have a 22 foot boat and it is all I can do to move it. They sell a 2 wheeled dolly with a ball on it for a price. So I went to the local supply store habor freight and bought a heavy duty crank up jack with no tire but a solid square pad on the bottom. I then found a solid rubber tire with ball bearings for the axle and the for it to swivle. A friend that welds is going to make it slide on the bottom of the jack and have a couple of pins for easy removel when trailering.

Default Trailer jack tire ideas?

I've got the new boat, but now that it's bigger and heavier than the old 16' starcraft, moving the boat around in the driveway is just ALL KINDS OF FUN! I had my wife helping me this weekend, and in between the terets episode, I managed to torque my shoulder too. The plastic wheel on the jack is useless. I either need a dolly to hook up to the tongue, or a good rubber tire, the plastic one is now missing 1/2" of material on one side, so it won't turn even if I beg it nicely. Anyone have some good inexpensive solutions. Cabela's sells a nice dolly, but the price hurts me.
Thanks,
GBS

You may have too much tongue weight.

Trailer tongue weight should be at 10% of the towed weight. So a 2,000 lb trailer load should have a tongue weight of 200 lbs which could be measured with a bathroom scale. If its more than 10%, then move the axle foward on the trailer frame.

Hope that helps.

I don't know the circumstances but if you're not already, you might try becoming more adept at backing your outfit. Paint lines where your tires need to be so that you won't have to keep getting out and checking for clearance or asking someone to guide you. OR how about a ball on the front end of your rig? If these don't work then by all means, just get one of those dollys the boat places use. They work really well as long as you're on the level. Hope this helps. Good Luck....

I saw some of the dollys mentioned at an outlet store here in Longview for $40 although I don't know much about the quality it's some kind of off brand I supose. Can't remember the name of the place now..."something,sumpin"liquidaters it's on 3rd just north of the Tennant way overpass. They did look pretty solidly constucted though all steel and welded w/rubber tires.Personaly I envy your problems, with my little leaky tub I can pick up the tounge and pretty much push her anywhere I need too.

GBS Is this a dual axle trailer ? If it is they just wont move like your a single axle trailer because of the drag on front axle. If it is a dual axle you can get car wheel dollys and put under the front axle wheels , this allows the trailer to move without sliding the wheels and also takes weight off the tongue. Bob
