How do you "ping" another boat to get location etc using your dsc function?
1) You need to know his MMSI number
2) If you have it already in your radio (programmed), you can usually select him by name, if not, there is a manual input mode as well.

What radio do you have? I can look up the manual online.

Is it any problem giving out your MMSI number publically. I.e. on your signature. Might be a good way to look up other i-fishers, but wondering if that opens up some can of worms I don't know about.

Not at all. There are a few lists on here already (not posted lists, but managed lists). One is a salty dog list with most folks that wanted to share. The other is a port specific list - which is more specific.

You will find, however, the best way to share numbers is via face to face meeting. It's a bit like posting your cell number in public. It's always best to first know who might be calling you. My "personal list" - meaning the one I manage for my boat - is comprised of guys I've met personally. It contains numbers of guys that don't want thier number on a list - so I don't give out my list.

Catch & Eat manages the CR list.

If you would like a copy of the CR list you must first be willing to share your MMSI number.

This is way cool technology and well worth the effort.
