Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
I caught some nice Ling's off of the North T-Bay jetty a couple of weeks ago. I was from a boat but I was only 30-60 feet off of the rocks.
I was using twin tail white grubs and a 1 ounce jig head. Just be careful on that North jetty, it is really messed up!!
Good luck,
Andy

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
When you're shore fishing for lingcod, the key is good water visibility. So go fishing when the water is at their calmest, and also pick an area where there is a big dropoff where they like to ambush rockfish and surfperch.
I have tried the North Jetty several times, but I never got even a bite. There doesn't seem to be adequate depth around the jetties at the T-Bay for many lings.

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
At the risk of sounding a little "green", lings should not be disturbed when they're on nests. As soon as you pull a ling off the nest hundreds of small fish devour the eggs. :depressed:

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
I had a call yesterday from a friend who said they've started biting a week early from the rocks at Depoe Bay. I'll get down there and do a story the week after next or so, but they're biting now and he said where he fishes is pretty safe...as hard as that is to imagine...

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
This time of year I fish for Lings in my freezer
In a month or two that will change...
I may have room for one more from time to time....

Keta,
How does one know when the lings are on their nests?

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
I agree w/ Keta. The female comes in early to spawn and then leaves. It's up to the male to protect the eggs from predators (greenling, perch, sculpins, etc) and they also regulate the temperature / oxygen around the nest by using their fins. They are very protective and will bite at almost anything that comes their way. The lings you catch near the shore are pretty small becomes they're all males.

Keta and uspolymer:
I agree, the males guard the nests till the little fellas hatch ...
but you've got part of the reason wrong. They guard the eggs because
the eggs lure other fish into striking distance. As the eggs hatch, the
little fellers *also* become food for the larger males. Ain't like
the males are guarding the nests because the are good guys or anything
like that!

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
I have found I catch fewer males, and more keepers when I use a lure that looks more like a fish (or a real fish), and less like a rubber worm.

Fish N Russ,
Are you talking about bank fishing or boat fishing? If bank fishing, I'd be interested in hooking up with you.

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
FishNRuss, went last fall out to the S Jetty at Newport and knocked em out...bout 3/4 of the way out...used 3/4oz lead with either dark gray or smoke colored shad bodies...the two of us brought home a 42" each. Caught and released 20-30 overall.

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
Talking about lingcod fishing really bring back good ol' memories. Just awesome fish to catch and to eat.
Besides live bait and plastic lures, what other lures have you used to catch lings? I once caught a 14 pounder on a Hopkins spoon.

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
I have some 'fish jigs'......they are rubber but look like little fish with silvery sides, black top and little tail that wiggles when it goes through the water. They are about 3" long and I used them with a 1oz (I think its 1oz anyway) jighead before for rockbass.......would something like that work on Lings??
Sounds like we need to get some folks together for a 'Ling Trip'..........those rocks are pretty tricky to walk on, safety in numbers there

Re: Looking for Ling Cod!!!
What about the Columbia jettties, Is the north jettie fishable or would it even be worth going out, Ive caught a few from the south jettie out of a boat in the summer but never from the bank. Really interested in these fish and I don't know anyone that knows how to fish them, would like to learn more about them.
The one day last summer off the south jettie was so awsome, we limited on salmon and watched a boat back in there catch a fish, so we followed. We caught 3 keepers and about 6 or 7 subllegals, not mention about 8 seabass! We were using 3 oz jigheads with 9 inch brown sluggos. (i had some bass gear with me) It was so cool. Went back in there a few days later and got zip.
Would like to find out a little more about how and where to catch these fish more often. Thanks
