Default Mounting an antenna

According to the instructions on the radio that I just bought the antenna should not be closer than two feet from passengers.

My boat has a center console, one that doesn't have a bimini top or overhead frame mount so it will be close to the wheel and close to passengers. Is there any real danger? Are there other solutions? Would placing sheathing around the antena where people might be closer that two feet work?

Only causes Cancer in California. Don't worry about it!
Put an extension on it and raise it 2' if your concerned. The extension won't have the active transmission component (and that's what the warning is about). Besides - an extension will improve your range a little.

I am a amateur radio operator (HAM). We are vary aware of what is called "RF Radiation". There is a safe distance of exposer. Visit this link and it will help you calculate the safe exposer. http://n5xu.ae.utexas.edu/rfsafety/
I assume you are using a standard marine VHF radio. Max power output 25 watts, 156.800 MHZ is marine VHF Chanel 16, gain for a regular VHF antenna is 6dB and the distance is less then two feet I assume. This will calculate the safe distance of exposer.

Don't quote me on this but I believe the only issue is when broadcasting. If you only use the radio occasionaly, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Mount it and don't worry about it. There's more risk of cancer from eating Twinkies!

I've been around radios for years and only got cancer once. Maybe it was when I was in California.

I'd mount it and not worry about it.
