Default Remington 798???

I would like to know if anybody has any strong opinions about the Remington 798s. Love them? Hate them? Comparable Rifles? Opinions on the actions? Superior to the 700 action? Me and some cronies are thinking about gifting one to a good friend. Replies much appreciated.

I handled one for about 2min in a shop.
Immediate impression was a rough, unfinished copy of a mauser.
Lacked smoothness and did not seem to have a good feel or finish.
That doesn't mean another one might not be better.
Just my 2min $.02.

These are what used to be the Interarms, then Charles Daly, now Remington mausers. Under the Interarms and Daly name there were different grades. I am not positive but I think the Remingtons are pretty limited at this point. The Interarms guns were pretty nice with some trigger work. I handled a blued/synthetic Daly just before they became Remington and thought it was pretty rough too. According to the owner it does shoot pretty good though. Not sure if any of that helps.

Remington bought the rights to the Yugoslavian made Mauser sporters. They were imported here under the Interarms name for years, then Charles Daly imported them. Remington bought the rights, stuck laminated stocks on them, poof, you have a 798.

deadelk,

There is no "did", they "do". 798 link is below. Interarms and Daly versions came in most standard calibers up to and including .375 HH. Expect Remington to come out with more versions.

These guns are a nice commercial version of the Mauser, but nowhere near the quality of say an FN Mauser. They work good. Accuracy is on par with other Remchesteruger rifles.

Check out the site:
