How can I protect my plants from my dogs?
Spent a little money and a LOT of time pulling out ivy and planting some shrubs in the backyard.
A few weeks later, nearly all of the plants have been destoryed by my dogs. Trampled, not dug up.
Did a brief online search, but haven't come up with anything.
Is there a little wire blockade I can buy to put around the plants until they've established themselves? Does a company make a 2' picket fence?
Any ideas to protest my plants?

Re: How can I protect my plants from my dogs?
I think some place like home depot or a fencing supply store would have a little 2' wire fence with wire "stakes" coming out of the bottom. I think it may be used for gardens, climbing flowers and peas, etc. I have seen the stuff but don't know what it is called. I have made a lot of these fencing rings (usually 4') in the past to protect trees from beavers along a creek.

Re: How can I protect my plants from my dogs?
I used small garden fencing on areas near the house to protect it from my 2 large dogs. It is only around 16" tall, but it works well near the house or other objects. It is pretty cheap and can be found at any home/garden store.
If the area is out in the open (like my garden), I had to use the 36" tall mesh fencing with posts to hold it up. This keeps the dogs from jumping a small fence. It is more spending, around $50-$60 total for the fencing and posts, but worth it if you want to keep them out. I found decent prices at Lowe's.

just make a little round corral that straps onto the dog...then, where ever they go, they are fenced in...

I just put up those little wire thingys that you can buy anywhere. The dogs bend a few till they learn to avoid them. I also made some short fences out of bamboo that do the job and don't look as bad as the little wire thingys....

Re: How can I protect my plants from my dogs?
they make an electric fence specifically for dogs (called Fido Shock). It's lower power, so it doesn't light them up too bad. I used one to keep my lab out of my wifes flower bed. It worked so well, I could fence that dog in with a piece of string after that.
Other option would be the motion activated sprinklers. I have used them for the deer with good results.

Re: How can I protect my plants from my dogs?
i would make up a mixture/solution of chyanne pepper and water . put it in a spray bottle and you can spray it on and around the plant . . the dogs really dont like the hot stuff to much

I tried that with the same lab mentioned in my post above. He had a habit of getting in the garbage cans, for a snack.
I decided to try straight cayenne pepper. I put in early one morning, before I went to work. When I came home, the dog was standing at the garbage can, waiting for more. He would lick it off as fast as I could sprinkle it on there.
He is actually the 2nd dog I have had that liked cayenne peper.

It was crazy. Both dogs were male labs. Both dogs would have eaten cast iron if I could have cut it into bite sized chunks.
