RockFishing from the shore
I've done a bit of Sea Bass, Ling Cod and other rockfish-fishing from different rocky areas on the coast (bank fishing) and would like to know of more. Anyone have some good ideas.
Also, I'd like to start targeting Ling Cod more than any other. Anyone know more about their habits, spawning areas, baits? etc..
I'd like to learn more about these.
thanks

Re: RockFishing from the shore
I've fished Boiler Bay, near Depot Bay a few times, and last February, when the lingcod come in near shore to spawn I had something big, probably a ling cod, grab a greenling I was reeling in. I was there earlier this month, and hooked something that peeled line off of my reel before coming off. The next month would probably be good for lingcod there. You'll need to hop the fence. I fish on the north side of the parking area, it's sheltered from the waves that break on the other side of parking area. You'll need to hop the fence, and be prepared to lose a lot of gear in the kelp.

Re: RockFishing from the shore
Nice, I've tried there a few times and have had some good success on both lings and rockbass. Haven't been there recently but an anxious to hit it for lings!! Biggest last year was only 12 lbs and i'd like to hit 20lbs someday....my goal! There are a couple other spot along the coast that produce well, also.
You say you go on the NORTH side, where there's that 40ft wall and fish out into that? haven't tried that yet....thanks again

Re: RockFishing from the shore
Sublime: The north side of the parking lot, which is the south side of Boiler Bay, off of the big cliff.
mcsmd: It's very easy to get to. Just go to Boiler Bay Wayside, off of 101, and park on the north end of the parking lot. Hop the fence, and throw your line in. I've done well off of small peices of prawn, herring, smelt, just about anything. Put on about an inch and a half of pencil lead off of about a two inch dropper, and about a foot of leader. Cast where the kelp isn't too heavy, let it sink, reel in the slack, and you're in business. That works for the greenling and perch, I haven't targeted the lincod, but they're in there. If you catch a greenling, I hear they make great lingcod bait. You may have trouble getting a big lingcod up the cliff. I imagine at low tide you could take one of the trails down to the beach, and fish in there, but the trails looked steep and unstable, and I didn't want to take them down. Check them out, you may feel more comfortable than me getting down there. The trails are off of the highway, not the wayside. You'll need to hunt for them a bit.

Re: RockFishing from the shore
Any other good fishing opportunities from a smaller 15 ft smokercraft 40 hp engine, that is bay-worthy. I use it in Newport for crabbing. Got some nice striped perch the other day...
but what else should i go for??

Re: RockFishing from the shore
Happy Brew- do you think that big something could have been a seal? I have seen them in Boiler Bay. Yikes if it was a Ling how would land it.
Sublime- By boat I would certainly caution you on the rocks when fishing around jettys and rock structures where the fish usually congregate.
Ifish has had a couple of Jetty fish partys(BOE's great BBQ Oysters) down at the Bar View Park some people did Ok. I have never landed a Ling off that jetty but I have know people who have. Lings like live bait. Go down by the docks get candlefish or small baitfish and go to the jetty put a hook in their back and throw it out for Lings
I have heard some reports of fishing from Ilwaco Jetty rocks using blue and white worms. Fish are in spawning close to the rocks. Be prepared to looose tackle.

Re: RockFishing from the shore
If it were a seal, I would have seen it in the vicinity, but I didn't. Not that I haven't, just not at that time.

Hey, do you normally use bait? When we've gone to Boiler, we usually use plastics and do fairly well...However, i'm sure bait could work a little better sometimes.

Re: RockFishing from the shore
off the rocks of port Orford with a sandy shrimp should do well starting anytime now... Or you can do what I do. go to the first buoy and take a left.... (water is kinda cold to swim out that far though.)

Yeah, I normally use bait. I've never done well on plastics. I'm not sure how to fish them.

Re: RockFishing from the shore
Last year at barveiw rock after everyone went home and the tide calm down we hammered two nice lings and a bucket full of seabass. The lings were on the ocean side and seabass were in the jaws side. one ling went 8lbs other was about 12 both were fat and good eating. We found a lure that just killed em little spendy but was very productive when fished right, sometimes 2-3 bites a cast. Email me for more info on lure.

Re: RockFishing from the shore
The outer third of the north jetty at Newport can be very productive at times. Fish the bay side with 1/2 -3/4 oz jig head with plastic grub around 3-5 inches. White works well for rockfish, darker colors for ling cod. Cast out 20-30 yards, let sink to the bottom (sand this far out), the slowly work the jig back in, bringing it up the face of the jetty - there's the trick - a little too close and you're snagged. Take a handful of jigs and a good sturdy bucket to haul the catch back. This fishery is very off or on - some days they're there, some days not. It often seems to be good when the dredge is clearing the shipping channel - big chumming machine.
Be careful of the rocks, any mist makes them very slick. Watch for sneaker waves, expecially if you try to fish the tip or the ocean side (which is much more difficult and I've always found it to be less productive)

Re: RockFishing from the shore
Pirk is right. Get out at low tide and spot the fingers sticking out into the bay at yaquina. then get a landmark in the rocks so when tide is high you can easily find the fingers and fish them.
