Question gasoline spill in car on carpet

On the way home from the gas station the gas container fell over and leaked on the back carpet.

I blotted the spill with towels to absorb as much as I could. Next I washed the carpet with Joy dish soap and blotted dry again. I also tried cleaning it with Simple Green. The smell is still REAL strong.

Any suggestions on how to neutrilize the nasty smell of gasoline in my car's carpet?

Thanks

It's probably in the padding, as well as the carpet. You might want to remove the carpet and pad, douse it all with a big box of baking soda, vacuum it and let it air dry.

Roll down the windows and park it the sun. Don't be hauling hazardous material in the passenger compartment BTW.

With a Jeep Liberty, the gas can has to be inside the passenger compartment. When I go to fill the gas can I usually put it in a rubbermaid container but didn't this trip.

The Jeep will be parking out in the sun with all the windows down.

Baking soda or coffee grounds are a couple of other things I have been advised to try to nutrilize the smell.

If there are any other HINTs let me know.

Thanks

try sprikling it with odor neutralizing per-vacuum powder. Arm and Hammer makes it. It should do the job. I know when I moved in it worked on my carpet after the previous owners pets wreaked havoc on it.
