Re: Salty Dogs Tuna Contest?
Sounds like everyone has a favorite category. How about: largest alby on 8 or 10 lb test?

Re: Salty Dogs Tuna Contest?
Count me out. I figured out a long time ago that a sure fire way to limit my success fishing was to start betting on it, or even just making it competative.
How about this one:
Best time had on a tuna trip?

I'm with Kurt.
If the category is "best time on a tuna trip", I think Pilar and I have to claim that one retroactively for 2002.

Re: Salty Dogs Tuna Contest?
Go Kurt and Jen!
I have enough problems competing with myself. I find competition leads to the "zipperlip" syndrome and creates entitlements for the "in" crowd. One of the things I find particularly appealing about Ifish in general and the Salty Dogs in particular is, the inclusive and sharing nature of the members. I would not like any possibility of dimminishing that. Bets on board? sure, that seems fun. Bets between boats? sure that could make a good day more exciting. Bets on Ifish? I hope not.
Just my view....WP

Re: Salty Dogs Tuna Contest?
How about a contest to get ME into MY first Tuna?
I even had to go buy my own boat just to get a chance to go Tuna fishing and even that looks kind of grim right now.
It's gonna happen though. This WILL be the year, even if I have to take a charter.
As far as catching the first Tuna, my wife threw me a jar from last year and I caught it. I told her that that didn't count but if it wins me this contest I'll change my mind.

The only thing you are going to have to worry about is what to do with all the extra tuna.

Re: Salty Dogs Tuna Contest?
Hey UG,
Tell us more about Ixtapa / Zihwatanejo. I've been looking for a warm-water place to take my wife and I/Z sounds intriguing. I've looked it up on the net, but how about an insider's view.

Re: Salty Dogs Tuna Contest?
Great !, a contest, ah hummm, let's see, now if there were enough mulligans , blind pigs finding acorns syndrome, and just plain dumb luck I might have a chance. Oh, and also lots of consolation prizes for us wannabies. Hot damm. Count me in!

Re: Salty Dogs Tuna Contest?
Skein - Ixtapa / Zihwatanejo is a buncha fun.
It is some of the best Wintertime fishing in Mexico. Cabo fishes better in the summer and is expensive, Zihwatanejo fishes better in the winter / spring and is cheap.
Species -
Sailfish, world class
Dorado, good to excellent
Marlin, good to fair
Wahoo, good to fair
Tuna, world class
Roosterfish, excellent
Grouper, world class
Barracuda, world class
You can stay in Zihwatanejo for around 30-40 bucks a night for a clean room with AC. It is not tourist oriented. Ixtapa is very tourist oriented, and is about 80-100 bucks a night at the Resort Hotels (Howard Johnson's - Club Med, etc...) The two towns are about 10 miles apart.
Ponga Charters are about $150 a day. There are bigger paots avalible for more $$$. When on a solo trip I have fished with the local commercial guys (Mexicans supplying fresh fish to the markets / restruants / hotels) just by paying for their gas. Reeling in fish is work for them and they think its real funny that the white guy would buy their gas to go "work" reeling in sails and tuna.
Lots of nice beaches, etc...
I can usually go down there for 30,000 air miles (free ticket) and stay / fish for about $100 bucks a day. You can eat real well for $20 bucks a day, beer (corona) is about $0.35 a bottle.
It is paradise.
Myself and a couple other ifishers are going down March 19-25th. Another ifisher is taking his wife and we are going to hook up for a day or two of fishing.
My father in law retired down there to fish and lived there for 7 years before he passed away last year. I have been there many times and know the area pretty well. I have friends that live there 6 months of the year, and know quite a few of the local Mexicans as well. If you have any questions please feel free to ask and Ill try to awnser them.
