Default What's Yer Boat?

Okay, so what do we actually have for a Tuna Fleet?
Tell us what you've got for the run to Tuna Town.

Make
Model/Style
Length/Beam
Motor(s)
Fuel Capacity
Radios
GPS's/Plotters
Radar
What else?

I originally thought this might be good to know so I can compare equipment. If eight boats all run Honda outboards, I'm gonna think maybe that's the way to go. But...maybe I could also build an inventory to see who I should bum a ride with.

Nah, I wouldn't do that.

20' Hewescraft Searunner with a 130 Honda and a 9.9 honda. GPS and VHF with handheld back-ups for both. 35 gallons of fuel in the main and an additional 36 in portable tanks. We're beammy and have lots of freeboard. Runs good at 22 knots in average seas. calm seas can run up to 45. Minimum additional equipment and no heat.

This year might be the first. It sound like so much fun.

21'Thunder Jet Alexis Hardtop

Length/Beam 21' 6' bottom

Motor(s)350 marine power/Kodiak pump
Fuel Capacity 80 gallons, 20 in cans if necessary Honda 8hp troller. Really this boat is much more efficient than the past boat with the American Turbine.

Radios,CB, VHF

GPS's/Plotters,2 hand held GPS's Garmin 176 Chartplotter

Radar nope

What else? Air Ride seats

We have 20 miles out and I would guess not much more for tuna. I know this is not the ideal boat for charlie but we use what we have. This is also my Neha Bay boat.

Tollycraft
Sport Sedan
34'/12'-6"
Cat 3116's
300 gals fuel
3-6 berths (depends on how good of friends you are  ) for overnighters.

No trailer trips down South for me. Pretty much CR TUNA flotillas for me.

The "rest" copied here from "Whats in your Offshore boat" thread.

Two VHF radios on separate antennas.
Two helms with electronics (GPS/Radar/Chart/Depth) and compass on each helm
Two Diesel Engines with separate fuel tanks and dual filtration
full fuel for offshore trips (300 gal)
15 life jackets, 4 TypeI with whistles and reflectors, 2 kids, two vests for those folks who don't bring there own wearable and my own self inflating. The rest are cheap crap for dock party CG requirement.
Float coat
Storm suit (will work as non flotation suit to keep you warmer in the water)
A whole drawer full of flares/signal devices/smoke/day markers etc (one set always within legal date)
Full Engine compartment auto fire extinguisher (Halon- YES!)
3 portable fire extinguishers (cheap crap variety) placed around the boat
3 throw cushions
1 weighted throw rope (man OB)
Cell phone (usually 2 or 3 with crew on off shore trips)
Company (other similar equip'd boats that could take on 5-6 added crew safely)
Anchor with 200 feet all chain rode
Additional spare anchor/chain and rope rode
Someone on the dock has our float plan (as well as at home)
Spare parts (Fuel filters-bout a dozen, full raw water pump replacement, belts, engine relays, fuses, wire, connectors)
Two tubes of caulk that can be applied under water if need be (can make a patch out of fabric and caulk)
Plug kit (for holes in the hull or broken lines etc
3 bilge pumps
Full tool kit
Manuals for everything on board (ever have your radar go out in the fog cause you blew a dang fuse after you wrapped a fishing pole in it?)
6 kw Generator (can keep bats charged if mains are down)
Two full set of Bats (starting and house) that can both run each other
Dedicated electronic bat and gen set bat
Good (not top of the line) first aid kit
Log Book (Fuel log/Maintainance/Spares etc)
Flashlights/Storm Oil lamps (when all other light fails)
Charts
Chapmans (Piloting)
Bowditch (American Practical Navigator)

"76" -21 ft. Fiberform San Juan spl. Bought new at the '77' Seattle Boat show. Has a rebuilt 165 hp Mercuiser, but only has a 35 gl. fuel tank, I keep 24 in res. plastic cans in the bow. VHF (that will hail the CC) and the old 15 hp. Evenrude for back-up. I still need to improve alot of the electronic's on this boat, but the sea worthyness has long been proven. I just need more hrs. on the rebuid that was done a yr. 1/2 ago. No radar yet but thats on the wish list. A Handheld Garmin76map, plus a new sounder will be installed for the BFB opener. That'll be my test run for Tuna, if there are anymore problems with the rebuilt power train on this boat I'm moth balling her!! I can't bring myself to do it yet, great boat with many memories, I can afford a bigger and newer one but as long as my "Dad" and his boat are around we're fish'in it. Right now it's a 16' Flat bottom with an 80 hp Merc tiller w/ a pump. 7.5 hp kicker for a back up and about a 25 gallon fuel tank.
Hmmmm, I'm not sure this is going to work.

Still looking for "The Boat." Striper, Trophy and Wellcraft are all on the list, but haven't had enough time to do much shopping.

You guys are kill'n me with all of this tuna talk! You don't know how bad I want just go buy a boat that's completely ready to go. Radar, GPS, the whole works. Hopefully by summer, but I'm sure it'll be 2004 before it sits in the driveway.

What is your range, I also have a 21' alexis. I have been out in pretty rough conditions (wasn't rough when we left) & the boat handled it well. I also have 80 gall tank but have a hamilton 212 pump.

Bayliner
Cierra
24' x 8'
4.3 vortex V-6
55 gal.
VHF
GPS and Loran (not for long!)
No Radar
Aft cabin (great for the late arrivals and early departures, beats sleeping in the truck!), enclosed head (keeps the Miss's happy), fresh water wash down

Wish I had a bigger back deck (currently 4.5'x7.5') and more fish storage, and out riggers would be good!

Andy, just tear out all those useless cushions and tables in the front and throw in some more coolers!

Of course the next time your misses wants to sleep down there you'll have to explain how tuna blood is good for the complection (well atleast Baitboy hopes so) and don't mind the smell!

Jet-
My old 20' NR had a 350 with the Marine Power 3 stage pump. Had fuel injection on the motor as well. Burnt right at 60 gallons on one trip the Ranch and back. The next time I went out, we went through 70 gallons.
I would never do the tuna thing in that boat simply because I thought it lacked the needed range, even with extra gas. JMHO

75 HP Suzuki backed up with a Honda 8HP 4 stroke with EZ Steer and hydrolic steering
Furuno 1621 Radar
Raethon DF/FF/GPS
Garmin MAP 76
VHF
Hand held VHF
Compass
Scottie Electric Downrigger
8 PFDs
2 throw cushons
First aid kit
Porta pot
Extra prop
All manuals
Shore power
Dehumidifer
Lots of other stuff
Oh yea, wrenches... Lots of wrenches...

Norrivdave you have a permanent spot on the sea swan whenever we go out. I'm thinking of docking her down there this year and after a couple of runs I may even let you skipper her out a few times.

Guys on the board this is a guy to have in your boat trust me. He has a little something down newport way that really makes the trip worth it.

Tuna Diiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Skein's boat? A river runner all the way.

2000 Jetcraft Whitewater 21'
350 Chev Vortec w/Kodiak pump
15hp Merc Kicker
67 gal fuel
Garmin GPSIII
Hummingbird 400TX
All the goodies, like:
Air-ride seats
Full swim platform
Top-side clean out for jet (sweet!)
Heater
Full canvas top
Cannon EasiTroll Downriggers (2)
Anchor w/200ft line

Great boat, but not for going outside. That's why I've been talking with Ed Wing. The Jetcraft will probably go on the block this spring (if I can get myself to part with it :depressed: ) so I can roll that money over into a deep water boat. I'll tell you, it's tough to think about selling it....

Skein - who must be pretty serious about this tuna stuff.

21' Starcraft, 1966. A little old, and light on fuel for the Tuna haul, but a good salmon / bottom fishing vessel. I have my sites set on the 24 seasport a few years down the road. That'll get me there  . In the meantime, I am hoping that I can crew for some of you guys and get some experience under my belt. Very willing to work, learn and share expenses.

I have not been after tuna yet, but I'm looking forward to it this year.

I'm putting together a 21' wood dory for my ocean trips this year.
Garmin Fishfinder
Magellan Marine GPS
VHF and CB
70HP & 10HP
Not sure on fuel yet thinking 50 gallons plus extras

It won't be the smoothest, fastest or the best looking but it should do the trick.

Painter,

Several things work against this being a blue water boat. First off, it's a 12 degree vee, which is pretty flat for the waves and wind-chop. Secondly, because it's a pump, I'm losing too much range even with the 67 gals. It's not a 120-mile boat. And finally, it's open in the bow with fairly small drain holes. A wave over the bow would make me pretty heavy up front. Subsequent waves would not be pleasant.

A braver, or more fool-hardy soul than I could probably take this boat out and back many, many times, but I think it would always be at the risk of everybody on board. I don't have the right - or desire - to take that kind of chance.

It's a nice boat, but it isn't a tuna boat.

Skein

My dory was built in 1970 but I don't remember the make right now.

It's 21' and I believe the beem is 6' flat bottom, with an inset motorwell and center consol.

If you ever saw the one sitting behind Tillamook Bait (that's it). I'm in the process of finishing the project and getting it back on the water.
I'll send you some pics later this week.

Another proud Thunderjet owner.

21' ThunderJet Alexis Sport, with a fixed frame grey top, maroon. Air ride seats.

350 marine power, AT
Fuel Capacity 85 gallons. I've seen other TJ owners mention 80 gallons. Salesman said 85... who know. I do know that its at least 80.
Merc 9.9hp kicker.
VHF, compass, handheld GPS

Never ventured into the big blue, at least not very far, until last year. With the great advice I recieved on IFISH each trip was great. I did make it to the Rockpile 4 times, as well as several near shore salmon trips.

I know this is not the ideal (far from it) boat for big blue but its what I have. As long as I'm patient for the good weather, this boat will work just fine. I just can't get to the fishiing holes as fast. I'm really hoping the tuna get within 20-25 miles from shore.

See ya on the water....

With the boat I have the smart thing is to do is get a charter. I have been looking for creative ways to come up with a Tuna Boat it is a matter of time.
15 ft Seaswirl Trihull Open Bow
60 hp Merc
Hummingbird FF
cb 20 Channel

Yep this boat is why I charter. So any Tunaholic that cant take their boat to a lake let me know mayber we can work a trade out for a open seat.
