Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Hi All, we need to do a slight re-set here. The March 8th date won't work. So we're looking at either March 1st or March 15th, both Saturdays.
Plan is still for Newport. However, Popeye (Bruce) will look into using space at the Rogue Brewery which is stumbling distance from his boat. If the Rogue thing works out, it will relieve the people limit thing.
Please tell us if you have a strong preference for the 1st or the 15th.
Thanks for bearing with us.....

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Either one is fine with us with the 15th being the preference due to the fact that there's still a chance for some good hatchery steelhead'n the weekend of the 1st...

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
The 15th works best for us, and I like the idea of the brewery. We can soak up the suds, talk tuna trash, and THEN GO TOUR POPEYE'S BOAT!
However, don't wear your inflatable jacket - the guys that hang out at the brewery have been known to pull the inflation strap. Actually it's kinda fun. You end up looking like the Michelin man with a beer.

I could probably make the 15th.
My question is, we are ready for Newport but is Newport ready for us?

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Count me in.........be it the first or the 15th. Although I vote for the 1st.....that way if it is a successful party (it all depends on you Mark) we can have another one on the first of April for the unbaptised souls that couldn't make this one.
Mark, I have a few other ideas for doorprizes.
Wakem...........I may take you up on the upstair crash pad if no one else jumps on it and my better-half lets me go for the evening. I'd love to swap Mexico story's, as I just got back from a 6 week fish/surf/dive/drink/fish/boat/hang-out/sunbake in Baja. Marlin, wahoo, yellowfin, dorado and roosters. I will be in touch when the dates get firmed up a bit.
Hope to see everyone.

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Hi All, I just got off the phone with Popeye, and I mentioned how the preference so far is clearly leaning towards the 15th. So he agreed, let's put a stake in the ground and plan on the 15th.
Also, it appears that an idea has surfaced to bring at least two camper/trailers, that would make a great barbeque setup with awnings & all. In addition, several folks have mentioned bringing their trailer boats. So this could turn into an extended meeting / party / campout.
It's pretty certain now that more people can be accomodated than originally thought. Please let us know if you have any inclination to bring another camper, boat, rik-shaw, or whatever; still lots of time to plan this part...
Thanks.........Mark Mc
p.s. Seasquid, yes I love the Dead Guy, but how about that Russian Imperial Stout? Or Old Crusty, if you dare?

The crabbing tide looks kind of crappy but maybe a good afternoon outflow for sturgeon. Maybe leave the pots out overnite? I would do some night crabbing but I don't think I'll be in anykind of condition to command a vessel by then
We got a room at the big hotel across the street from the marina for Sat. night. $119 for a room with a balcony overlooking the bay and bridge. Hot tub, and fireplace in the room Geez, I don't think I can wait two months for this

The 15th works good for me.
The extended weekend bash is a good idea. Crabbing, Ling fishing, and upper bay sturgeon is a possibility; and if I were successful I could put together my famous campfire Chipino.

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
I can make it. Could spend the day getting crab and feed a few souls. Anyone else want to crab. The herring should be in by then. Spawner herring aren't the best but they make an okay back up fished whole. This is starting to sound like a party not to be missed. Could the weather possibly co-operate?

Oh, good.... Now I don't have to wear my Sperry Topsiders to be piped aboard Popeye's yacht. "Permission to board captain?"
Should I wear my tuna boots? It might get a little deep at the Rogue Brewery. What ever happened to the Piptide anyway????

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
I've got some shad left in my freezer that I was saving for crab bait, so I'll bring it to share. My wife started having an allergic reaction to crab so we don't do as much crabbing as we used to.
Thanks for your work on this, Mark & Popeye. Should be another fun event.

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Well I'm back from the boat, looks like this thing could turn into a lot of fun! I think the idea of the BBQ set-up will lend the most flexibility for everyone. I can bring my trailer with awning to maybe set beside Skein's to provide shelter for the activities (I sent you a message Skein) and also provide some bed space. I also have a good sized Traeger Pellet BBQ that I can bring, and a crab cooker. After thinking about how cramped we might possibly get in the Pub, I thought this might be a more relaxed scenario with the option for those who wish to visit the pub, can at their leisure. It became very obvious to me that more people wanted to attend than the Julie Rose could accomodate, and this way we can have the best of all worlds. I just couldn't stand the thought of even one Tunaholic not able to attend that wanted to. After all, the Invite was made with the best of intentions, and definately wasn't meant to exclude anyone!

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
I like the BBQ idea, and Popeye and I should be able to find a spot to park our trailers so the awnings reach. I have to get some minor work done on my awning, but that should be out of the way by then.
I too have a toy hauler, 28ft Dunes, that opens up in the back. I can accomodate probably four sleep-overs if they bring their own sleeping bags. The couch makes a bed (not real comfortable - better for kids) and I can throw in a futon that will sleep two. We're also kid-friendly, so the kids are welcome.
Bring your boat, stay overnight without motel expense and hassle, and go fishing/crabbing while you're here.
Email me if you're interested so we can plan.

Skein,
I will be bringing my motorhome. Its 34' and has a pretty big awning. If you don't have time to get your awning fixed, don't worry about it. Or we could make a "U" shape with the rigs. Looking forward to meeting you guys.

Hehe - Bruce, Welcome to our nightmare. We overwhelmed the DD, now you're taking down the entire city of Newport in gridlock! Tunaholics crawling out of the woodwork. They'll drive for hours and spend the weekend just to talk about it . What's going to happen when summer hits and the SST goes to 60 deg?
I'd love to bring the MH and make this but (like somebody else I know) I've got one to many boats and need to focus. See you after the "old" boat sells.
You folks have fun. I'll tip some TUNA sauce that weekend and be thinking of you!

At that time of year, the lings and rock fish should be in the bay spaning. Makes for great fishing off the rocks at night. Can even do well with a fly rod. The posabilities just do not end if you are not too drunk.

Hi Popeye (& all), here's the list so far.
Confirmed:
Popeye
wak'm
fishwhenican
fishplay
WP (2)
skein (2)
salmonator (2)
marty (3 if wife & daughter along)
mark mc & phil B (2)
Pilar & Mate (2)
Peter Mac (2)
Orca
Seasquid
Corrirod
eightball
hawghunter
----------------
24 total confirmed
Maybe; not confirmed for new date of 3/15:

So it's probably 25 to 30 if everyone shows up, and we get a couple more between now & then.
Please let us know if we missed anyone. Anyone thinking of bringing their kids? Would it be difficult for anyone to avoid cussing like a sailor if kids are around?

Rod - tell me about your kids. How old, what species, etc. (hint: I might get "permission" to bring our 5 yr old daughter if we knew there would be playmates).
Bluebeast, does your wife know that you are referring to her as "Mrs Bluebeast"?
Popeye - begging your forgiveness for omitting the head honchess from the list.

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Mark and Rod,
My trailer will be available, so if it gets a little breezy or cold, the kids will have a place to get inside - right there. Also, Rod, Corri (sp?) can set up a bed or changing area for your little one that's out of the weather. So bring 'em, they're welcome!
Remember, I've got a toy-hauler, so there's lots of wide open room inside. I can fire up the furnace and they're set.

Sounds like a great time. I think I might drop over and meet a few of you. Especially with all of the fishing options!!!!!!

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Hey, maybe we can have a hunting party in the morning, for the elusive chinook, at the pile? If the weather and ocean cooperate, we could definitly find and club a couple of fresh orange tuna!
I am getting a little nuts about getting out for albacore
See you all there on the 15th!

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Hey all. This sounds like a good trime for all. I will be coming over early in the morning, 7 am, to do a little fishing for what ever. If we can't brak the bar maybe some sturgeon fishing or some rockfishing on the jettys. What about ouside crabbing? will that be open then? Anyway what time do you think the bar-b-que/cookout/party/whatever will be starting or will it be an all after noon thing. I will probably bring a couple of buddies alng for thew ride. Can I help supply anything? got some salmon both roast and smoked, sturgeon, some tuna. all kind os stuff. Just let me know what I can do to pitch in.

Popeye, will I be okay to fly on the 16th? I have to be in Louisana on the 17th but I sure don't want to miss this gig.

I was planning to fish Salmon out of Garibaldi that weekend. Does the Salmon opener extend down to Newport? What time is the get together starting?

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
I am planning to bring my boat, my son and 1 or 2 crew members providing I get my boat through a successful sea trial by then. I may go down as early as Wednesday night to start putting away some herring and stocking up on Crab for the festivities.
My boy turns 10 on March 2nd and is excited to go fishing in the Pacific this year.
Anyone bringing kids, remember to bring their life jackets! It is against the law for anyone under 12 years old to be on the dock without them.
I hope to see you there

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Okay Guys And Gals.....It's getting close enough that I think it's time to start making definite plans. I spoke with the Harbor Office about RV spots, and told her what we had planned. She said that she will need your name, length, and credit card # to hold a spot. I told her that we would like to stay in a group, and she said the earlier you book the better. The charge is $23.76 a nite w/10% discount for Good Sam members. For those of you that will be staying elsewhere, Skein and I will have our trailers there to accommadate the festivities & BBQ, so it's just those that had planned on bringing their RV that need worry. The phone # is 541-867-3321. Since that is the Chinook opener, you should probably book soon. Also, she said the credit card won't be charged until you check in. In the next few days, Mark Mc and I will be trying to nail down the "List of People" and food and beverage plans. To start that effort, I am bringing a Traeger Pellet BBG, and a Kegerator w/half keg of beer, and will be adding to that as we go. So whattaya think

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Great, Popeye, and thanks for the info. Have you chosen a spot number, or shall I just request next to you? I'm only sorta familiar with the layout, since I don't usually camp there. I'll call her today whether I hear back from you or not.
I'm sure looking forward to this shingig and a tour of the Julie Rose II.

Re: Tunaholics in Newport, Take 2
Hello Popeye - I am planning on making the meeting but I mighht not bring my boat since it is an open boat and if I can catch a ride with someone it seems redundant if there are boats with empty seats. If there is a shortage of seats I'll haul mine down. It can hold 3 or 4 no problem but it is pretty crude in the seat dept., and amenities, you know tin can head, etc.
I have a favor to ask - It is a long haul home for me from there, can you recommed a motel close-by or do you have a website for the chamber of commerce so that I can investigate what is available? Also, is there anything that is needed - food - beer - other stuff?
best regards
