middle willy report for 7/12
cedar oak launch
air temp started at 65 ended at 90
water temp 69
on the water at 6am
wind started blowing by 630 and made things a little tougher.
we fished til noon, by that time the river looked like the lake during the caddyshack regatta ...boats of all sizes, load music, horns blowing, skiers, boarders kayaks...oh my.
caught fish all day til around 11am. maybe 14 fish nothing bigger than 13".
used plastics of many kinds but caught most on ol' reliable yamamoto single tail....I used to run it on a jig head, but now use a split shot and circle hook rigging...i can get the hook down by the tail more than you can with a jig head, drastically increasing hook-ups...also, bait "swims" better. i saw guys sitting nightcrawlers on the bottom catching nicer fish, I just cant bring myself to mess with worms at this stage of my life
several times i would spot bass on humps and rocks on the sonar, but couldnt get them to bite....i think, that is the situation where drop shotting is the trick....i have to learn that method.
great morning on the water regardless of the success. next saturday, another willy trip...maybe back to wilsonville.

KSTOCK and I fished Saturday morning, launching from Willamette Park. Only managed a few fish also but had similar issues. Marking fish all over the sonar but was unable to get the fish to bite any of our lures. We tried diving cranks, lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, drop shot, texas rigged worms and grubs. We did learn a bit more about that stretch of the water and it was interesting to see all the bass boats zipping up and down that stretch of river during the tournament.

Keep at it Trey. You know that time on the water brings a little more success each time that you go. I am currently patterning smallies in areas that there are not supposed to hold smallies (around Longview) and am limiting out (at least) every trip. I have no one with any knowledge so I am having to build my own knowledge base. But the bright side: no competition. Hope u guys had a fun. Bill

Interesting Jade, what pattern did you settle on?
I suspecting we're in the typical summer tubes deep pattern?
Cuz they sure aren't near shore anymore....well dinks maybe.

Yeah!!! We ended up getting a couple more fish after that. Nothing special though. We ended up with about seven or eight keepers for about four hours of fishing. We ended up getting all but one keeper off that bank I was telling you about. The tide was totally out at the time I saw you guys so fishing was done for us. I wish I would have got out before 9:30. I hate getting up early....Got some good prefishing done though.......

I've been getting quite a few fish trolling the shallows with a craw crank. It's about 75% dinks, but there are some quality fish (12"-16") mixed in. The key is to be there between first light and a few hours afterward, and then again from about 7-8:30 pm. The tide seems to have nothing to do with it. The shallow bite absolutely dies after those times. There's also some topwater action going on near shore during those AM hours, if you can figure out how to get them to bite.

Trey
If you launch in the OC area Sat let me know. I may just launch and say hi, but bring my boat too. I have a TR1 auto-pilot getting installed Thurs and want to fiddle around with the settings etc.
Smallie fishing sounds fun and low key.

Trey, don't be surprised if you see the dog & I out there.
But I might also hit the CR instead. Need to check the tide schedule.
Or I might go up river after eyes, if the wind would cooperate.
But I'll be on the water in the morning somewhere.
Heck I might even sneek out before then. And come into work late.

I haven't really had any success with topwater, probably because I'm not willing to slow down enough when they're hitting cranks. But they're there.

You're still a cutthroat Trey. Sounds sinister huh? I don't care what they call you, you're alright in my book man. OK, it's thursday, what's your plan?
