Default Cabo San Lucas this summer. Need info

Hi all...
I have never posted on the saltydogs page before but I thought this would be my best chance at getting some good advice. I am heading down to cabo sometime between June and the end of August...
I would like info on any charters or giudes you folks would know about and also any places where we can rent a boat and go out alone.
Can any of you also let me know what kind fo fishing to expect (i.e. species that are most likely to be available. Dorado, Tuna, Marlin , ect.). Also should I fish in the Pacific or in the Gulf?... Anything you guys can give me would be great. I want this to be a good experience for my dad, little bro and me...

Thanks all and tight lines.

No story, no what?... I am not new to Ifish. I have just never posted here on the salty page. I have posted many times over on the main board... But if you want a story?...

Down here in AZ, we don't have salmon and sturgeon. So the biggest thing we do have is catfish. We were fishing below a damn out here on one of the rivers outside of phoenix. There are only two... Anyway, the day was going really slow and after 3 hours of no fish we were getting discouraged and sunburnt. It was only 9:30 in the morning and pushing 100 degrees!!! we were going to call it quits when my little brothers rod starts bouncing like our poles would do when a sturgeon would bite up at bonneville. I get up and set the hook on this bad boy and the fight is on. We were using 15 pund test and even lighter leader. Needles to say I fought that fish for about 40 min. Finally landed that beast of a flathead and it weighed 32.5 lbs even. I knwo that because some kids fishing down there had a scale and we used it to weigh the fish. So once we got it on the bank and just indulged in all its glory, we took some pics and proceeded to release it. It lived for that long, there was no way I was going to kill it. some guy offered me 20 bucks for it but I turned him down and after a few minutes of craddling her in the water, we watched her slowly swim away... Unconcerend about what just happened and really didn't seem to care either.
So, that is the biggest AZ fish we have got to date...

There... Now you have your story. I was going to use a salt water story but by the time I thought of it, I already started writing this one...

Thanks and now can I please get some help?...

By August you are into the hurricane season. Don't know if you want to do Cabo then. Now is the time to do Cabo.

I have an old friend that chucked a career in Silicon Valley and is living in San Jose del Cabo. He rents his condo for cheap and is a hellva fisherman.

For years we have been going to the village of Buena Vista, which is about 45 minutes north of the airport on the Sea of Cortez side. We go for Fathers Day, so end of June. We have hit the sails very well, and get marlin, tuna, wahoo, etc on each trip too. This is not a tourist spot to speak of, everyone there is pretty much there to fish. Nice accommodations, cold beer, good food to be had in the area.

Thanks all... There was some limited but good info given. As for the hurricane season, they don't scare me and I actually wouldn't mind getting into the eye of the storm.

As for the fishing, I would go to a more remote place that caters to fishing primaraly but my mom is also coming along and she will need something to do while the boys are out fishing. I just want to have a good time and enjoy a week in a sunny place where I can catch marlin and tuna and everything my little heart desires and still be able to come back home in the evening and kick back an ice cold Corona... Is that so hard to ask for?... I do appreciate the help I did get and if anyone comes up with anything else, please let me know. Here is my e-mail jsut in case.

As for you friend moving down there from cali, now that is a dream move that I would more than love to fullfil... Unfortunately, I don't have the money and living in AZ is almost like living in Mexico... Thanks for his info. I will drop him a line and maybe he can help me out...

Thanks and tight lines.

Fishawhatever...

If your in Arizona, why not drive down thru Tuscon/Nogalas and on down to San Carlos/Guymas? San Carlos is just as nice as Cabo at half the cost and better fishing at that time of year. Guymas is not tourist driven and is a buncha fun. I even know a few guys that live in AZ and take their own boats to San Carlos fairly regularly, its only a 5 hour drive.

Just something you might not have considered.

Fishalohlic

I just spent 6 weeks in the Cabo area and have been going down there for the last 15 to 20 years. We generally do our own thing with friends that live there, but I have some good info on pangas out of La Playita that fish the Gordo Banks, and have pretty good knowledge from Cabo to the East Cape. June to August is a great time for just about everything that swims down there. Hot as h### and the south swell is in full swing, so by heading around toward the east cape area, the seas will be much calmer. Buena Vista area is great, Rancho Leonaro and La Ribera are all wonderful laid back no tourist type areas to hang-out. I have too many questions to ask about your trip for me to throw out a one place does all. Feel free to give me a call at 503 623-6030 and we can chat. That time of the year you can expect pretty much anything that swims.......schoolie yellowfin tuna closer to shore, the big yellowfins (gorillas) 100lb. plus under the porpoise offshore , dorado up to 50 lbs. being a mainstay, blues and black marlin a solid possibliity, sailfish and stripped marlin pretty thick, especially if you fish with live bait. Shore fishing is awesome, with toros (jack cravell), roosterfish, ladyfish and skipjack being the main shore grappers. There are places to camp on the beach for $10 to 15 a night or places to stay for $500.00 a night, plus everything in between. Really depends on your pocketbook and your style.

Wakem just got back a couple months ago from a Cabo trip and he has done the baja thing for many years also.

Of course the price for all this info is story's to feed the malnurished fishing souls during the long winter months.

Thanks all... The heat may be a problem for you folks up there in the NW but I have been down here in Phoenix for two summers and heading into my third. 110 degrees is average from about mid June through the end of August and it doesn't bother me. I've been driving my Civic down here for the past two years with NO A/C and I am still alive and kicking it... Its not that bad.

As for the tourist stuff, I am also looking for some of that to. I am 24 and doing some windsurfing and scuba diving sounds fun also. Plus the clubs will be a nice little get away from the family. If it was just me, my dad and little bro, I would be all over them fishing geared areas and stay far away from Cabo.

Marty, thanks for giving me all that help. I figured the fishing would be pretty darn good around that time of year. If you don't mind, I might try to give you a call tonight or this weekend. Any and all info would be more than appreciated.

UG, I have pondered that question many times but I don't have any fishing buddies down here that can handle the salt. They get sick like a bunch of little girls so its basically just me, my dad and brother... This will be our first outing but I am positive it wont be our last. Once we get a taste for them harder fighting fish, I am sure we will make a trip through the Nogales area...

Thanks all and catch some silver for me.

Fishaholic,

If you are looking for the most bang for the buck I would recommend renting a panga from Gordo Banks in San Jose Del Cabo (Captained by a local). Del Cabo is the town that you hit after leaving the airport on the way to Cabo San Lucas. Probably won't get into any marlin, but just about every other fish species in the Baja area can be caught. unfortunately I think the time that you are thinking of going there is not ideal. We hammered alot of nice stripped tuna in April a couple of years ago along with a couple of rooster fish. In october of last year we nailed some hog yellowfin's
(3 over 60 lbs.) and some nice durado. We found the most effective way to hook up with a boat was to go down to the Gordo banks boat launch in the early morning ( they launch off the beach) and strike up a deal. They will probably quote you hi ($200.00). We talked them into a boat for 3 people for 6 hours for $150.00. It is nice if you have a couple of buddies going with you because it is just a bunch of friends in the boat. Beware, after hooking up with a few 60lb. yellowfins in the heat
you will definately want to have some cold cervasa's on board. Good luck to you. Almost forgot, if you have transportation there is a fishing village about 60 miles up the baja on the sea of Cortez( Los Barillos) that is cheaper and actually better fishing than out of Cabo.

FishaholicAZ - the heat won't be a problem if you ar used to 110 in AZ but the Humididty may be. It really gets high down there in the Summer. Remember - You got water (85 degree water) on 3 sides of Cabo plus the temperature. Go fishing at 4 am, back by 10.

June-July is a transition period down in Cabo. Striper fishing gets real slow, Blues are just starting to show. The really big Tuana are still in the sea of cortez. That said, try early August, late July. You will be fishing East towards the sea of cCortez. Lots of nice fish caught around las Palmas, Gordo banks, and Los frieles. The local wisdom is that the big hurricanes usually wait until early September, but technically quite possible in August.

Once again thanks all... You guys have lived up to your reputations of making Ifish a class act. I appreciate all the help and I will be sure to let you all know how it turns out... I didn't think about the humidity. That may change things fast.

If anyone has anything else they think I may need to know, join in the convo... All help is appreciated.
Thanks.
