Are they there
The latest SST shows that there is 60.5 deg water at 22.5 miles staight off of a nice little port. If the wind will let up so that the sport boats can get out.
How many of you think that the longfins are still hold up off of our coastline now waiting for our arrival?

Re: Are the there
I've been checking that constantly. At that distance the temp has risen 2 degrees in the last week.
I'm there until Mon night. Mon, Wed, Fri - Sun next week I will be ready to make a run as soon as I can get combined seas < 7 for an entire forecast, altho I'd sure like 3 -4
But, I bet I know a couple of other guys that will be blasting out there on Tuesday and they don't need <7
Bet we know by Wed PM if they are anywhere inside of the 125.

Re: Are the there
They gotta be there, or at least close by, I'm guessing a few larger Boats went out today to find out, I'll get my chance starting next weekend...weather permitting, I glad I saved my vacation day's now, I plan on fishing all the do-able day's the last 2 weeks of the Month.

Re: Are the there
In watching the wind patterns, I noticed that after the southern wind blew for a short while it switched to a circular motion off of our coast. I think this has had an affect of moving the warm water farther off of the southern half of our coast. Now this wind current is moving in a circular motion bringing the warm water closer to the northern half.
So all of the mariners from Garibaldi to Astoria has now got a shot at the fish when the wind and the swells lay down.

Re: Are they there
Come on guys... we do not need to debate this! The Tuna are here. Now if mother nature throws us a bone there will be tuna blood spilled on to our decks. With the few that were caught off of winchester, and the fish that the charters got off of newport, once the sportboat fleet leaves port it is just a matter of time before we get it dialed in.

The reason for the post was not as much are they there but rather how far out they are, given the SST off of Garibaldi. As I stated there is water that is 60.5 deg. at 22 miles.

Re: Are they there
Crackerjack (Yaquina Bay Charters) was out 68 nm today for 2 fish. 4 1'2 hour run in on a 43' Delta....... I canceled trips planned for th, fr, sat, and sun. Had another going Tuesday, the client postponed after hearing about the weather forecast and the Terafin pics. The first tuna are always spotty, hit-and-miss fishing. I hope no one lets their desire for tuna blood lead them into an unsafe situation! They are NOT to die for.....

Re: Are they there
From looking at all the latest temp and chloro shots this evening, the very best + closest tuna water above Blanco is west of Winchester Bay 40 - 50 miles. The temp break is long & sharp, and the chloro break lines up perfectly with it. It is cleaner water than the stuff to the north that is 60 miles out.
43 50 x 125 10 & thereabouts.
Middle of this shot:

Re: Are they there
That's almost exactly what I was looking at when we pulled the trigger. The SST is a bit deceiving, though.

That's really only half the story... According to his deckhand (my stepson), Jack gave them every option to re-schedule due to rough conditions, but the customers insisted on going out. The 2 fish came in about 20 minutes of fishing, but the passengers were seasick and asked to stop fishing and return to port. In other words, we don't know how many they would have caught if they had fished longer. Definitely a long way out on sloppy seas, but Crackerjack did find fish.

Re: Are they there
Well we have decided to wait another week and see if things get better, I have to remind myself that once it starts we will still have about 2 months or so of going after them..
