February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Hey folks! What a Wonderful time we had at the 1/17 meeting. It was so good to see everyone! I think I managed to talk with almost everyone, but know there were a few I missed!
I know this is probably a bit soon to be setting up the next one, but we have some out of town guests in Feb... so I thought that since we have the rare opportunity, we'd set up the next meeting right away.
When: Feb 3 or 6
Where: Portland
Place: TBD
Time: Probably around 6pm
Why: 'Cuz we can!
Let the roll call begin!

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Hey- I haven't got "the list" typed up from the last one! See what I mean about these clubs being work!
When are we going to have one of these meetings at the coast. I hear there's a place with a LOT of room located at about 125 deg West. Pick you own (L)attitude.
Monday or Thurs? Should be able to get a spot picked easier than Friday. Kinda bad for the Capn but we'll see what we can do. Gotta meet the California MB!
Keta- I think your up this weekend too!

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Hey Bruce, great offer. There is at least a handful or two of folks in the Corvallis/Albany area, more if you consider the mid-valley, so it would be great to have one of these down this way sometime. This suggestion is not meant to de-rail the PDX plans; it's just that for some folks, it would be a lot more do-able if it wasn't a 4 hr round-trip.
Shall I start another thread on this option?

Since I'll be working the Sports show in Portland this meeting would be easier to attend, If it was on Wed. or Thurs. Any chance of making it later, say 6:30-7:00??
Popeye, saw the Julie Rose lll at Newport last weekend, that one yours? nice boat

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
I may be able to make it on Fridays. I also think a later start time would be better for those needing to get accross the city or who travel.
Bruce, I'd love to attend a function in the Julie Rose, 14 hmm that's about 2 crews, right?
Wak, I have a guest room here if you need one.
Jen, you're the greatest

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
By the way, I don't think the Dancing Dragon handled our group very well. The food was o.k. but we gave them notice and told them how many were planning to attend and the wait just to place an order was too long little on getting the order. I guess it turned out o.k. with the big screen and all but we should give fair warning to wherever we choose for the next venue, just MHO.

Popeye,
I'd have to take off my boots before I got aboard your boat. Miss B doesn't mind the smell of sheep manure in his boat  Just don't let his captian know where the stains on the carpet came from, I like her and don't want her ****** at me

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Mr. F: I agree, the DD didn't do well on the service end, but they were accommodating in other respects. We continue the search for the "official" TA "clubhouse".
Got a message from Corrirod about a place on Hall in Beaverton that sounds good. Perhaps we check it out in Feb or Mar.
I'd like this meeting to work for MB and Keta, so let's work toward the 3rd. Then MB can make it to the Sportsmen's show on the 6th and Keta can make it to the Dalles on the 4th.
As usual, I'd love to be able to schedule this when EVERYONE can be there, but if we keep staggering days of the week, everyone's bound to be able to make it at some time.
Popeye: I love the idea of having a meeting in Newport. Perhaps April or May? On a Friday or even Sat. evening? First day of Halibut? We can all sit around and talk about how much fun halibut is and how it doesn't come close to tuna fishing
Stay tuned folks!

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Either the 3rd or the 6th work well for me! I would endeavor to make either date. I look forward to meeting many more of you tuna blasters and future tuna blasters. Thanks Jen for taking the lead in organising these.
I would also really be up for a mid-valley/Newport get-togeather and gab session. Weekdays work best for me but I would take some time to join the fun.
Tuna fishin is commin' soon! WP

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Gotta agree about the DD. We lost the really good Chinese rest. in Hillsboro (The Imperial Inn). They lost their lease. Later they tore the building down and dug up some old gas tanks where it sat!
We (Toni and I, Pilar and Mate) ordered like a 1/2 hr early so we could get out of the way and visit (knew the crowd was going to be big). Food didn't arrive until the rest of you started getting food and it was cold!
The problem is finding a place with a banquet room on a Friday night that doesn't charge for it. Weeknights aren't as much of an issue to just "take over" a place. We'll keep looking!
I can get a real clubhouse at the dock, but that means it's BYOF and BYOB.

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
bait boy - It's free, part of my moorage "perks" (Scappoose -on the Channel) I just need to let them know so there's no conflicts. Occasional parties held in it. It's normally the work out room so there's some equipment to move around. We just have to clean up when done.
It's been a while since I was in it I think it's good for about 30. I was a little out of it last time. I'll check it out this weekend.
There's several of us down at that moorage (8knots, Crasea, no cents and one lurker Tunaholic ). Boat tours are a bonus for the local!

Sensei-san, what are you saying?! Yes, there are other fish in the sea, but we don't say that out loud at a meeting. We prefer to stay firmly planted in denial.
Come to the meeting, bring whatever you like, but I'm pretty sure the restaurant will reserve the right to refuse service to your stinking carcass - FISH carcass that is!

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
That fish was to ugly to go extinct. I'm betting that we have them here too. What is the IGFA all tackle record for Ceolacanth?
So, some of you guys and gals watch Nova? Me too, it's just about the only consistently interesting and meaningful thing left on TV.
I really liked the one where they went to Russia to look at Chernobyl. Especially the part were the KGB guy hosed the ceramic nuclear blob in the basement with bullets from an AK47 so they could pick up a chunk for a sample. That and the 'Biological Robots' they used for cleanup. I wonder if they have 3 eyed fish there?
What's the IGFA all tackle record for 3 eyed fish?

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Funny you should ask. I was just looking at the IGFA records yesterday.
Nothing on Coelacanth (surprise, surprise) and nothing on Albacore, either.
BUT - They do have something called a Tuna Royal Slam Club. This requires NINE tuna species caught under IGFA rules in one's lifetime.

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Pilar, you mean the eye on top of my head where I get messages from space aliens is not supposed to be there?
Actually I was kidding about wanting to catch a coelacanth. They are way more ancient than even sturgeon. After seeing the NOVA show I have a great deal of awe for the beast. That it could survive untouched by anything for millions of years is amazing.
I thought that the world record for albacore was set in CA a few years ago. Somewhere in the range of 95#. A friend thought that he had a record at about 80# when the big one was caught only a few days later. Both were caught off Monterey.

Pilar, when are we going to have a Halibut's Anonymous meeting? My 6/0 reel on a 5'6" Ugly stick with 80# spectra and a halibut spreader is looking better and better. I can let the dust bunnies grow on the long fin stuff for a few more months yet.
Should I defrost the salmon carcasses and slather them up with stink oil and bring them to the tuna anonymous meeting to get the juices flowing for dinner?

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
I am VERY open to suggestions on where to hold this meeting. It looks like the tally will be 12-15. I was hoping to do it in PDX somewhere with very easy access for our out-of-state guest(s).
If PeterMac is willing to bring and share his video, I was thinking that we'd go ahead and do the Dancing Dragon again. They'd be better with a smaller crowd on a Monday night (if they're open) and they're very accommodating with the TV.
Or... Mr. F... we could have it at your house! Complete with WINGS! :-)

Anybody familiar with Racoon Lodge on Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy? I have met the owner a couple times, maybe we could meet in there downstairs area and I know that they have TV's. Let me know if you want me to check it out....

Great suggestion PeterMac, they have great brew, some pool tables, darts, etc.. Great food as well and good service.
Good spot but I'll go anywhere, just let me know.

Pilars Mate--I plan to attend the meeting. I live in Vancouver so if there is someone else over here, we can hook up. Thanks for your efforts and looking forward to meeting this fine group.

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
I can go wherever... of course if I have to go to downtown Portland I can guarantee I'll get lost without my GPS.
I'll be staying out in Hillsboro, so my preference would be westside. But not a big issue to go anywhere in the area.

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Keta,
Ride from where are you flying in too? I have rental car but I know driving around Portland is a challenge even for most that LIVE there but I think I can find any place as long as get an address that I can plug into map quest!
How long of a drive is it from Portland to Cascade Locks? That will be ultimate destination later that evening.

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
MB: PDX to Cascade Locks is about 1 hr give or take, depending on how you drive.
PeterMac: Yes, if you could check into the Raccoon Lodge, that would be awesome.
Pete also mentioned Lucky Lab, but there may be a small cover charge.
I'm slammed with meetings today and probably won't get a chance to make any arrangements. I promise to lock this down tomorrow, though.
Thanks everyone for your help on this!

Re: February Tunaholics Meeting 2/3/03
Baiter,
OK, I have to go through Cascade Locks on the way to the Dalles. It isn't hard to get around Portland if you don't have to take many side side roads and the trafic will be ok by the time we hit the road. I'm driving up.
