Bar Crossing Video
Hey, check this out. I got this link out of SEA magazine, it is a video put out by the Australian Boating College. Here is the link: www.abcboating.com It documents the how to's of bar crossings in all sorts of boats / conditions. I realize that there is no subsitute for the real thing, but I don't think it could hurt.
Gimme your feedback, c'mon!!
I think it costs around $45.00.

Re: Bar Crossing Video
You think that boat standing on it's prop (straight up and down and about to hit the deck) is one of the examples on how to cross the bar?
I guess if you could stay clear out of the water like that you wouldn't get wet!

Re: Bar Crossing Video
$78 is kind of spendy for a video. Might have to buy a keg and charge admission.

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Hmmm, good news on the price. That $79 is for both videos, and it is Astralian dollars - the US$ price for just the bar crossing video is approx $26.00.
That looks a little better....

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Good one Mel!
Well, for a guy with very limited bar crossing experience, such as myself, I figure that every little bit of knowledge helps. Granted, practical, on hands experience would be the best, as long as the guy showing you knows what the heck he's doing  .
I have a lot of questions, and it would take years to catch up to the knowledge that you more experienced guys/gals have out there.
Okay, I have talked myself into it. I am going to buy the damn thing, and I'll post a report after I have watched it.

...and if it's good enough, and you want to pass it around, maybe a few of us can "rent" it so you get your money back out of it.
Something to think about....

That is exactly what I had in mind Skein - only not really thinking of charging for it. Could be a good resource for some of us.....

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Purrrrfect! I like the way you think! I've got a little elk jerky and pepperoni that makes a brewski go down awfully good too.
And, no, I didn't get the elk at the 12 mile line.

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Party at Pmac's! Skein, if you would've gotten the elk at the 12 mile line, would you have put it on your fishing or hunting tag? If such an event were put together And if the pregnant wife lets me out. I may have to smoke up some springer or sockeye for the event.

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Okay, okay, the tape has been ordered - 4 day delivery from down under. I will report promptly, and if it is good, we'll just have to put together a little educational seminar . Maybe we could even get a guest speaker??? Hmmm let's see, that last pale ale of mine should be ready by then. Outstanding! I'll let you know...

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Sounds like a summer project to me, maybe make a "Salty Dogs" Oregon and Washington "bar crossing / harbor tour" video tape, Hamachi could do Greys Harbor, Mel or I could do Hammond / Ilwaco, Sombody else could to Geribaldi, Depoe Bay, Newport, Whinchester Bay, Port Oreford, Etc.... Put them all togther on one tape for the newbies or trips to new destinations?
Could be fun?

It would have to be the "unofficial" bar crossing video!
PS, UG- After that pic from the TA mtg, you aren't getting anywhere near me with a camera! Unless I'm holding a fish of course.

Has anyone seen the video yet? If so, what was the "real" charge on you VISA account after shipping and the currency exchange?
If both questions have a fair answer, then I would like to get it.
Thanks

So if you learn to cross the bar from a Southern hemisphere video, then you try the techique up here, would you end up doing it upside down and backwards?

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Yes, currently about $44.00 US$. Now, don't for get about the shipping. Add $11.00 for regular mail, and $22 for 4 day delivery(US$). I went for the 4 day because I am impatient, and I would know when to expect it.

Give me an idea on the number attending so I can plan accordingly.
I may have to warm them up in your oven or cook them fresh in your driveway, let me know your preference.
I'm looking forward to it. I have Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights pretty much open.

Re: Bar Crossing Video
I hope the video works. If you have trouble, it is likely to be a format problem. I believe Australia uses the PAL VHS format (PAL is the standard in Europe, while NTSC is used in the US and Canada). If so, it is unlikely that you will be able to view the tape in your VHS player since your VHS player is likely set for NTSC only.
OOPS! The first time I looked at their site, I couldn't find any reference to video format, but on second look they list that the video is available in both PAL and NTSC. So as long as they sent you the right version (which they should have) you'll be set.

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Nah, PeterMac, don't worry. If it's the PAL standard, we'll just jet down to Australia and hold our viewing in Canberra. It's just turning fall down there so it should be nice.

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Skein, that idea I like!
I am hopeful that the reason they asked me the country it was shipping to prior to anything else was to send the correct format (fingers crossed)..... Also, it was advertised in a US magazine.
Oh well, I'll know in a few hours!
Stay tuned.
An optimistic PeterMac

PeterMac,
Let me know if I should try to secure a location for the TA meeting that will allow us to use their big screen/VCR
Maybe with the smaller group, we should go back to the Dancing Dragon.

Can anybody post a 2.3 meg video (MP2) on their web site and link it here? It's pretty funny (and fishing related - even salt water related).

Re: Bar Crossing Video
Okay Dogs, the moment you've (at least some of you) have been waiting for........... drum roll please........ (insert your best Chevy Chase drum roll here)......
Hmmmm, not exactly what I expected, but I will still give it a thumbs up. This is an educational video, not Discovery Channels " Worlds Most Dangerous Bars". A fair amount of time on the beach discussing saftey issues, in fact, I picked up several good pointers that I hadn't really thought of.
It is filmed on a small bar, jetty-less, about half the size/volume of Nehalem bay. Smaller waves, but tricky in that there were lots of sand bars where the surf would kick up (yes, they were dodging surfers a couple times). The crossed in everything from a 12' skiff to a 21' enclosed bow, open water boat. Looked like they had a blast filming, lots of air time. I think all of us would like to get out and fart around in the surf like that!
All in all, probably a lot of info that is already known by the group here, but I am glad that I bought it. If anyone wants a reason to get together, have a beer and some snacks, do a little critique, I am open for it.

PeterMac,
You bet, I'd like to see it. I always stand to learn something new, and sometimes that one thing can be Very Important.
Don't want to put you on the spot, but I'd like to take a look-see. Maybe we can find a place and not have to descend on you.

Sounds great Skein , if the crowd is reasonable size, I can handle it, otherwise we could figure something out. You know, if you are going by Portland on your way up to Edwing, I would be glad to let you borrow it too. Sorry for delayed response....
