Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
Just up from the mouth would be your best bet now.
I have in times past caught ironheads on the 4th of July. I am a little smarter now and don't start till around 1 st or 2 nd week end in August.

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
First I heard was one caught just below Beavertail about a week and a half ago. Local went down last week and hooked three between Lockit and Macs. Tribal fishermen are getting some at Sherars Falls.

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
Slow. Saw Tom Larimer and Brad Staples fishing steelhead so I think it's on. I went as far as Washout before heading back up river. Beautiful day and the river is in great shape.

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
I'll be down there through this weekend. Hope to catch a steelie even though it'll be unlikely. I'll post info when I get back. Glad to hear the river looks good.
Is the river still pretty high? Coming down a bit?

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
Steelhead numbers crossing Bonneville are still impressive. 5085 on Monday (2052 at The Dalles Dam)!
Here are comparisons from previous years for the first two weeks of July:
2005 - 20427
2006 - 13822
2007 - 14519
2008 - 33195

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
I was told the white was blown, a few weeks ago, but i hear the color is ok now...(wait, now I hear its off color again)The numbers over the dam should mean a good year.

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
I hate to pee in anyones cherios but the deschutes has already gotten warmer than the columbia. If the columbia doesn't heat up we will not get the number of strays we have gotten historically...same as last year. So all those fish are heading to Idaho unless the river warms up.

It will warm. The B run still has about a month or so.

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
Sam,
You're right on about the temp. of the Deschutes. Fished the mouth last week (no grabs) and couldn't believe how warm that river was. Didn't take a reading but it's got to be high 50's, low 60's.
That won't encourage those steelies to head south, no matter how many are over the dam--they'll be hunting for cooler waters.

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
What is the temperature in the lower river?
The gage near Warm Springs shows a high temperature of 56 degrees in the last several days Gage Madras/Warm Springs.
The gage on the Columbia at The Dalles dam is 67 degrees Columbia River Temperatures.

Not sure where you got your info... The Columbia at the Dalles is 67*, while the D is running 59* to 62*. Maybe I'm wrong but I got the info off the internet, and we all know the internet is never wrong.

Where I get my information is on the river not the internet. I fish the deschutes weekly, and I live and work right next to the Columbia. I haven't put a pair of waders on for quite some time. I will get a reading next time I am out. I would expect the deschutes to be close to 70 by the end of the month (at the mouth). The temps upriver will stay cool but not at the mouth.

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
Slow and Low is right it is warming up on the lower section,We were getting water temps in the mid 60's the last three days.
Today it is 55.2 out of the Dam and by the time it hits Maupin it will be 60 and 65-67 when it hits the Columbia.

It is on. I fished spinners this AM, released 3 feisty nates, a bit up from the mouth. Fish are all the way up to Sherars. This will be the year I get one a fly.

Re: anybody hooked a Deschutes steelhead yet
I'm only 18 minutes from D so I get a lot of looks during the season. Hand and wrist water temp test (yesterday) told me it was about 62 at the mouth. Boat test (on the 14 ) showed 61-64 on the C at the mouth. Lots of fish in the D, very aggressive. Went through 8 fish to take one home for dinner. I fish flies , but not like you guys. Hot ticket for me was Spruce , (big #2), and purple perils, fished with a tiny spin-n-glo in front of a 1/2 ounce of bouncing pencil lead. Hot set up on the C was MJ's tuned well and pulled fast....

Dude, you will never catch one on a fly while fishing with spinners, trust me.

Went to Maupin this last weekend and saw a lot of fly-fishers. Hope they hooked up some studs. Nice fish slow and low.
