Is 58.5 Enuf?
ive been staring at these latest round of Terrafin shots off of the Southern Wash. Coast.
Im seeing lots and lots of water in the 58.5 degree range... Is this enough temperature to make it a go?
A bit north of the CR the latest NOAA forcast is now calling for 1 to 3 foot windchop and 3' swells at 9 seconds for sunday...
Im kind of thinking the Wilipa canyon is calling me...
But the water temp is where i have the hang up.. Last year it ws 59.5 to 61 degrees where i found fish... So what do ye' salty dogs have to say about hunting in 58 degree water? Looks like I could even find blue water/temp break about 45 miles out...

Re: Is 58.5 Enuf?
58 will hold fish as long as there is temp breaks in the area and the water is blue. without the tempbreaks and blue water the tuna have no real reason to stay in the area.
good luck out there!!,
Alex

Alex, you're completely out of your 13 year old mind
I guess you have no idea how many tons upon tons of tuna we have caught the last 5 years in water that is murky green, clear green, cloudy blue....the transition water BEFORE you get to clear blue.
I know you're just trying to help, and that it's well intended, but you might want to learn some of these things firsthand, rather than just repeat things from a tutorial from Coastside, etc.

Re: Is 58.5 Enuf?
im ok with the clowdy blue water, as I caught a lot of fish there, but its the 58 degrees that is giving a little more reservation.

Re: Is 58.5 Enuf?
Generally speaking....early in the season we have better luck towards the upper end of the range (the range of 58 - 62). But the later it gets....late August, into Sept, we get them in cooler water. By October, 58 is warm.
It's only part of the formula. If the water is 55 degrees, but there are birds working, a solid rip line with all kinds of stuff floating, and jumping tuna, are you going to stop and fish? (intentional absurdidty).

The good news is, it was a woman that answered and not a man...

Re: Is 58.5 Enuf?
Mike,
1st, yes. we've dropped gear in at 57 out of Westport and caught fish. It's amazing how quick I can convince someone to fish when they see jumpers
2nd, Very possible. I'm supposed to line up a tenant this weekend. If I get them signed up, then I'm free and clear. I won't know until later Saturday, so I'll give you a call before 7pm. I'm dying to test out the new hot pink jigs with hot pink hoochie teasers (that doesn't make me gay does it?). Got a few iron pieces from Chark.... too
You mentioned salmon. What's that?

Re: Is 58.5 Enuf?
If your going to go post it please or PM me. Where will you be launching from? I was looking at the coastal weather and have been dying to give it a try also. If your open to a buddy boat I may go to. Have a crew. Have the gas and set-up just been dying to hear they are here. Been looking at Salmon in the Straits as a back-up tomorrow also. But my son has been begging me to take him and the girlfriend wakeboarding tomorrow, so may not do either.
Plan now though is take the crew to Depoe next Friday-Sunday if weather supports for a kick off of spilled tuna carnage in the Hell Froze.

Re: Is 58.5 Enuf?
I know that this year there have been fish caught in murky green, and clear green water with temps as low as 58.

Yeah, in Southern California I too was taught you need blue water for albies. But here in Oregon I've had fabulous albie fishing in green water. There's even some evidence that the bigger fish are in the green water.
