Default Malheur/murderers Camp Trip

Just back from spending 8 days camping with a group of 20 friends and family on Bear creek near Parrish cabin CG. Mosquitos were bad but we enjoyed ourselves non the less. We took the kids down to Trout Farm one day to catch some trout, they liked being able to see the fish, I think it holds their attention longer. We rode the quads and dirt bikes to Frazier Point lookout, guy up top said it was closed to the public, its do for a stair well remodel or something, we were disappointed! We did ride to Soda mnt. lookout and the lady there was real nice and even gave the kids a little gift bag to take with them! We saw some real nice bulls in velvet, 3 6x6's together and a couple other single bulls. Took a truck ride down to Van one evening and looked for muleys, we drew tags for the Malheur, we saw a few, but right before dark we spotted a herd of elk about 50 strong right in a meadow by the road we were on! I would guess there were about 15 calves and I counted with the binos 3 bulls. We also saw 3 black bears around our camp and by Wendling meadows. The only down side to the trip was when I dumped my brand new Yamaha WR250R Dualsport in the Malheur river ford below Logan Valley! It was running as it went under!! Not good! I also injured my knee slipping on a rock as I tried to save it! Good memories with friends!

Eagleclaw,
I can't remember the last time I was out camping and never saw a Yellow Jacket!!!!! Yes, not one! I did have a Bald Faced Hornet come into the cook shack but he was the only one I saw. The Deer and Horse flies were not too bad either.

Jason,

Thanks... that's great news for us archery hunters... i was hoping with all the snow this year and with some late spring snow that the YJ might not do to well. Nothing worse than sitting down to eat or trying to pack out a elk and having to fight off a swarm of YJ.

Bummer on the Frazier L.O. I took my kids up into the L.O. about 8 years ago, you go thru the floor of the box and climb thru the windows to get out on the catwalk. Isn't the box about 90-100 ft ? There was an 85 yr old fire watch when we were there, and was telling us stories about growing up in Seneca during the logging/ranching heydays. WILD times!!!

See many turkeys?

The trade-off can be tough sometimes, cold and wet, mosquitos. Hot and dry, Yellowjackets. P.S. glad you had a good trip !!
