Hey - we'll have to talk about that lead pouring party at the mtg Friday. I've got close to 200 lbs of tire weights I want to donate to the cause. I only want a 10% cut off the BFB's they catch

springers at dawn Saturday, then sturgeon mid morning through the tide change
bottomfish Sunday
I could possibly tag along on Sunday, providing the bar isn't in a bad mood.
I'll keep an eye on this thread and the forcast.

Re: Sunday does look like the day
Thanks, Mel, good clarification. I knew there was another piece to the equation, but had forgotten the magic "duration" number. So duration is peak-to-peak and 17 seconds is a good number, eh? Seems like 3' wind chop would be pretty nasty though - or is that fairly common?

Re: Sunday does look like the day
3 feet of wind chop is about my limit and yes it is gong to make it uncomfortable and yes it is all to common. THinking back to last season there were probably 5 days it was 3 feet. A whole bunch more days at 2 feet and probably 5 more days at 1 foot or under.
17 seconds is a VERY good number (20 even better). So good that you won't find it very often. 10 or 12 seconds would be a really fine day on even an 8 foot swell.
8 seconds is about my lower limit and that's on a small swell (under 6 feet). If the swell is 4 feet and steep (6-8) and there's 2-3 feet of chop you won't find me going out. It's just not any fun at all. I might hang for a while if it comes up and I'm already out but I would not go out in that.

Miss B-
I like to call that a "confused" sea. 3' wind chop translates to 15kts of wind, and in my book, that's a nice day.

Re: Sunday does look like the day
OK, Saturday looks great to slay bottom fish, and maybe some nice ocean crabbing.
My dilema is this; Puffin is down, he had a bad encounter with Godzilla, his "pet" Iguana. Seems that it thought his right index finger was a taisty looking morsil, and took a big chop out of it. No salt for Big Jon for at least a week or two. Pilar is down for repairs. Sea lion is still shaking down his vessel.
I am looking for a ride, anyone going out to play?? Rod? UG? Mel? Wak? ANYONE???
I am wishing I could go fishing. Good crew, have own tackle, chip in on expenses, cleanup, food, etc. Will pull crab pots for just a couple of keepers.
Alas, I just thought I would share a little of my dreams with you all.

Yiikes! What the heck is Puffin gonna do about Godzilla!? This is getting out of control!
I'm sorry to hear Big Jon isn't fairing well... how did Godzilla come out of the altercation?
PC, I hope you find a ride. I'm wishin', too. We're slammin' and jammin' on boat and kitchen remodelling at the same time. Gotta get 'em both done soon 'cuz when it's time to play, we'll be playing hard!

Re: Sunday does look like the day
A 7 foot swell and total of 10 is the outside of the relaxing zone and into the work zone for me. I'd be all over fresh lings, cabezon and greenling, but I'm also thinking a relaxing shot at the early 5 year springers would make it a nice day rather than work. The springer prize is a big draw.
Boat's already in the water, early springers are there, sturgeon's a good possibility (keepers have to show sometime, freezer's still got fillets, so I'm releasing anyway) . I'm probably going to fish middle CR Saturday, golf Sunday and hope for a smelt show sometime in between.
Good luck if you go.

Re: Sunday does look like the day
I'd love to take you Tom but I'm not sure the boat's seaworthy at the moment. If I get a chance I'll kick the tires tomorrow or Saturday morning and let you know. It was running a little rough the last time out for sturgeon so I'll have to play with it a little and see what's up.
I'm always up for fresh crab my friend!

Re: Sunday does look like the day
Thanks for the reply, Rod. I am into short notice trips most anytime.
Some fresh crab with a nice ling filet sounds yummy indeed!
Thanks for sharing my hopes and dreams, I know they will come true in due time.
Anything I can do to help, just let me know.
Peace, Tom

Re: Sunday does look like the day
I'd love to go but I'm about 80 miles and 4 months worth of chores away! I haven't even washed the bottom fish slime off Miss B from the last trip yet. She wouldn't even notice a fresh layer but no Kitchen Passes for the skipper!
Gotta catch up during the winter or I'll be "Missing TUNA Aken" :depressed: instead of "Miss B Haven" this summer.
PS- Threemuch- I call 12 foot swell on 15 plus seconds and no chop nice. No swell, 15 knots and 3 feet of chop is perfectly doable (I'll be there) but I won't be calling it nice.

Re: Sunday does look like the day
Skein - 3 foot wind wave plus 7 foot swell.
3+7= 10 "doh"
That doesn't tell you anything about the steepness though. They usually don't forecast the steepnes and if they do it's only for the next day. YOu have to look at the bouys to get the period/steepness.
Check this link (for the CR ocean bouy - it's number 46029 just click on the number). You can check the bouys farther out and North for "what's coming this way" (assuming the swell is coming from the NW) http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps/Northwest.shtml
7 foot swell will kick your behind at 6-8 seconds (this is the duration peak to peak). Generally the closer the period the steeper the swell. Imagine a square wave vs a sine wave (if your an elect. guy). At 17 seconds you wouldn't even know that the boats moving. 3 feet of wind wave will make it bumpy (wind wave always have short duration and are steep, they "slap you around").
Oh- And I always hate it when the wind wave and the swell are significantly different directions. You can't get the boat going in any way that is "right" to ride either one. If your stern is on the swell (best ride) the wind wave will be slapping you broadside. Happens a lot around here. The swell will be w or nw with a s or sw wind wave. Usually refered to as "sloppy" or "mixed up".

Drat! Can't do it Tom. Wish I could but I'm just not going to have enough time to shake the bugs out of the boat by Sunday. I'll start cleaning her up over the next week or so and hopefully Big Blue will settle back down again and let us out!
Hope to see you tonight!

Re: Sunday does look like the day
Tom,
Sounds like everything is a go. We are heading down to T-Bay tomorrow around 10:00 and spend the night moored at the Garabaldi dock, if its open, I have a 24' Bayliner with grey top and blue stripe called "Fish Stixs" You name the time we will be there. It will just be you and I fishing, unless someone else wants to come along, my better half doesn't venture into the Big Blue .
Give me a call on my cell tomorrow 503-407-9036, leave me a message if you can't get through.
Sound like it sould be some good times!!
Andy

Re: Sunday does look like the day
The day was beautiful, the ocean was beautiful (actually beautiful is an understatement), but Tom couldn't go :depressed: , so I was bay-bound, no matter how much I tried to convince the Miss's to venture out into the ocean I got the big NO!
But we did OK on some nice hard shell crabs, and I was able to put one ling in the boat off of the North Jetty (man is that jetty messed up) with 2 other undersized.
Talked another boater that moored next to us last night, he left at 8:30 with a crew of 3 and had his 30 fish by 10:30 with 1 green ling and 1 ling included and some monster ocean dungies, I'm talk'n BIG! 13 dungies to be exact.
So Tom you missed out!!
Andy
ps. We also saw Tillamook County Deputies doing some writing, a boat brought in 30 undersized dungies!

Re: Sunday does look like the day
Fished out of Newport yesterday -- great ocean, good bottom fishing -- not targeting sea bass, but could have caught a boat load. We caught some nice lings, sea trout, china rocks, coppers, cabezon, etc....
As for the ocean crabbing -- oh my!!!! The largest crabs I have ever seen -- one of my pots yielded 18 keepers -- none of them needed to be measured.
It felt great to be out ....
The state police were checking at South Beach as well -- one of the more thorough checks I have had in recent memory....passed with flying colors.
cheers

Re: Sunday does look like the day
Fished for salmon Sat. morning, swithed to Sturgeon mid-morning and joined the armada on the Columbia. After moving a couple of times we managed to get a 47 incher in the boat.
Went to T-bay Sunday, ocean was very nice, actually got up on plane for a while. It's painfully obvious to me that I need a little help finding a decent bottomfish area. I'd been out a few years ago on a charter and thought I could locate something, but I hang my head in shame. I couldn't locate anything that would bite.
I gathered up my crabs and went home about 3:00.
Great day on the ocean.

Re: Sunday does look like the day
Fished Three Arches Sunday with my son between 8AM and noon. Managed to get our 4 keeper ling cod, nothing huge yet but some nice fish. Bonus was 10 big fat cabezon, biggest at 12 pounds. The ocean was nice and the fish were biting. 8" rubber worms and scampi tail, motor oil and glow seemed to be the hot colors, although I don't think it mattered much. Not many boats in the area which surprised me. All-in-all, a great day to be out there.
