Yes, halibut is good and next actually, but you will forget all about them by July.

The topic is Tuna, Al - ba - core with photos. What we need here is the deluxe deal with splash and photo.

So I'll throw up a few photos of the quarry of choice. Thanks all of you that have shared this joy with me and mine. We are so much stronger and safer as a team.

If you doubt this then watch what happens when Ifish hits the salt this summer.

Pilar how far out do you go to catch Tuna Al-ba-cor? Do you think one could take a 21' sled? That just looks like a lot of fun.

Sturgeon Tom, a typical trip covers 100 to 150 miles. We go about 30 miles out from Depoe Bay and troll at 8 to 10 mph for several hours. Sometimes the fish are clear out at 45 miles at a place we call Tuna Town. N45 W125. Others fish out of ports from Bandon to Westport. Newport, Depoe Bay, Astoria and Tillamook are the most popular ports.

A sled is not recommended because of the hull design. Long trips on a rough ocean in a shallow vee boat are murderous. Jet pumps are inefficient and it is difficult to have enough fuel for the trip, the high speed troll, the return and a safety margin. I carry 62 gallons and often burn 40 or more on a trip. If you have done much ocean fishing in that boat then you probably know what I am talking about. But there are plenty of capable boats and drivers on Salty dogs and often seats on boats can be had for the asking.

Al-B-Core? What's that? Only one trip this year... :depressed:

All tuna trips involve an early start (best the night before)...

Early start means early success!

Pilar: Thanks for the info and your right there is no way I would attempt a trip like that in my sled. I will try to hitch a ride when the time is right. The pictures hook me. st

I love this channel too  Maybe this could become a regular show??? I love these pictures. Maybe Ifish should have a "photo" page where some of these beauties could get posted and we could just tune in and drool whenever we needed to???

I went out one time last year with Mel, other than being sick , and catching up on some sleep , I loved it  . I hope to get another opportunity this next season.

PeterMac- how are ya? I think we all lost our TUNA virginity that day on Miss B. Considering the ocean conditions and our experiance level etc we did OK huh? Try the ginger caps next year instead of the fresh!
You ready for an overnighter this year? Lots of chances for those broken neck head back naps!

I am doing great and you can count me in, Mel!!!!! I had an awsome time out on all the trips.

I think Pilar and Mr. Fisherman have an "ocean flattener" mode on their cameras - make it look like that when we go out  !

Hey Booja, that trip was July '01. Got the salmon first, then chased tuna. Funny thing was, we hooked several big silvers on the tuna gear that day!

We've had several good combo trips the last few years, esp. on the August halibut days. NEVER pass those up!

Hey thx Mark for the combo idea.......We kinda get the mind set of albies or nothing usually but I can see if we get extra halibut days in Aug a guy has the opportunity for the hat trick........albies halibut n salmon,,,,,,,all in one day.......kind of a real stretch with the tuna having to be close to the ranch area but a great dream huh??? Last Aug we did see some guys limit on the flat ones and dble up on salmon coming home..I'll take that combo anyday but given a choice I'd go for albies over halibut like you did..................
