Just A Teaser
With all this talk about Tuna, we've forgotten about the "other white meat"

Re: Just A Teaser
Popeye - I really don't think that id needs to pick up another addiction just yet! He hasn't even been TUNA fishing yet and look what it's doing to him. He'll never survive the winter if you guys start in on those big flat boys!
PS- id, halibut season starts a lot sooner than TUNA, so you better get that Radar soon!

Re: Just A Teaser
Thanks, Popeye. I have been thinking about FB, lately. Every time I see the dwindling supply in the freezer.
I actually rounded up the 'No excuse rigs' and the other halibut stuff just last week. Now it's time to go down to Lents park and spool out the tuffline on the reels to see how much is left after Tuna last year. As much as I want to believe that the line does not fill the reel as far up as before because it is packed tight, every time I check it out I find 2 or 3 hundred feet missing off the reels.
You have to have 1.5 X the depth on the reel or you are just wishing. At the Chicken Ranch that means 1.5 x 600 or 900 ft, 300 yds.

Re: Just A Teaser
O.K. now your getting personal. What are you trying to do to me????
My poor wife. She will have to tie me down this summer. Hi Ho.
One big advantage i do have, is, that she(wife) loves sea food. Fish of all kinds.Oysters, clams, bottom fish, Big flat boys just like the picture, crab ect... ect...
I have spent this last year in recovery(not from Albacoreism)but from my injury.
I missed everything ,(hunting, fishing ) last summer. It hurt so bad. I didnt know what it was like to be a" home body", it sucks. I do not advise it . It even made me buy a new boat.
I had already thought of asking you about the big flat fish, but figured that you would think i was a fishing butterfly and couldnt stay focused (tuna, tuna, tuna) there im staying on track.
Why did you do that to me??? ( pics of big flat fish) Now i have 10000 more questions. id. p.
Any one want to rent me the room in your basement for the summer. HiHO

Another dead halibut for John
The Keyhole at 3 arch rocks, IDP, this is where is happened ... my girl discovered her salt water addiction. This was 3/5/02. Yes wintertime and calm ocean can go together.
What happens when I think about fishing offshore.

Re: Just A Teaser
Mel, please give all credit for that photo to my mate.
What you dont see is that we are between the arches. The big pyramid is right behind the camera and the other one to the right, you can just see the edge of it. You can't drive around the arches at will but on a few days a year.
A flat calm day. And like all the annual 1st bottom fishing trips I've ever been on the catching/fishing was superb. Jen has come to expect the catching thing. She just doesn't know better yet.
I spoil her.
Kurt, I'd love to but my fishing machine is down for maintenance. I tore off the coverboards and other wood for refinishing. It'll go again in 2 to 3 weeks.

Re: Just A Teaser
Kurt, thank you for the generous offer. I will consult with my mate and see if that can work.
Right now it is all wood refinish but soon I have to start replacing the howling bilge blowers and some wiring.
Here's a few more photos. I saved the best for last. Here's Ramstrong on his first Chicken Ranch adventure. He put his fish in the boat early on what turned out to be a nasty ocean day.
You can tell the ocean is unfriendly. Any of you that have photographed from a small boat know that it has to be really nasty to show up on film.
Ramstrong red handed at the Ranch
And then the 3 of us after a 4 hour tour back to the beach with a boat limit. The woman with the S.E.G. and the huge halibut is my mate in the early stages of ocean fishing fascination. It is a terminal disease that can take years to claim it's victims.
How sad............
Team Pilar, victory at sea. My mates 1st (biggest in camp that weekend) and I suspect not her last halibut.

Re: Just A Teaser
Hey, these pics made me realize something - you guys don't know if I can catch a fish or not. I figured I'd better post a pic or two to set the record straight.
All these were caught from my 15 ft Arima. Needless to say I spent some quality time in that little boat.
Anyone like Lingcod? The fillets looked like the backstrap from an elk!
Halibut? Did you say halibut?
We put 2 of these bad boys in the boat and had another on that we lost. I don't know where I would have stowed him.
My little lady and her feeesh.
When I found out how long it took to grow these guys, I quit fishing for them - even tho it meant giving up an incredible lingcod hole.
And last but not least, the pretty ones. Never get tired of watching them play.
I've got more - maybe I'll bring some to AA this Friday. You guys sure know how to get a guy's blood pumping!

I thought we were going for halibut on this trip and wound up with this strange sea creature and some slimy silver fish. Oh we did catch a couple of halibut too.

Re: Just A Teaser
Guys and Gals,
Any rumors about what they might do with the season this year? I'm going to the Ranch this season -- following you Popeye -- and forget about the Garibaldi deal -- too deep, but mostly sick of tangling with other boats and battling the charters on what has been historically the one good drift. The Rockpile has treated me well over the last couple of years also....

Re: Just A Teaser
Skein,
I miss living in Alaska, do you? When we get the skaner hooked back I post a few BIG BUTT pictures. I don't remember if we took any pictures of big lings and snapper, there were lots of them in the Ketchikan area.
Threemuch,
I always wanted to spear a big halibut. Big tuna would be fun too. I don't have a reel on any of my speer guns though.

Oh and everybody likes to see the big one for the day, Bait Boy's 78# hog caught on a Salmon rod with 30# line!
He makes that fish look big and heavy huh?
Yep, good ol' memory lane. Can't wait to make more this year.
