Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
A picture sure would be nice. Yes, a picture of a head in a dumpster would be a good thing right now.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
Salty Dog Board Members,
I am sure that this report had gotten more than one persons attention. The thread was locked to be sure that this was indeed true. I apologize for taking so long to open it back up. The original poster sent me a PM after I had asked him for further proof. He gave me a few details and some people to talk to. I made some more calls and talked to a few people. There were large Tuna heads but what was left out was how they got there. They were part of a catch from a commercial longliner working out of Hawaii and not off of Oregon. The fish were landed in Newport, the Tuna were Big-Eye tuna. One of the ODFW Dock samplers got some pictures of some of the other fish landed also. There were some other pretty cool fish in the mix. Some of them were for sale from one of the Port Dock Boats. Once again sorry to keep everyone in suspense but we wanted to make sure and get all the details first.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
out of Hawaii? Lets hear the numbers-someone out there is itching for a kamakazi run -load up the boat with 55 gallon drums of fuel and head west for the one way tuna trip of a lifetime-come on guys someone has to go- so gather a few buds(freinds) who are a little off and head west for one last run.
I'll start on the ceramic memorial next week
something like-
They knew no limits
dumpster crazed tuna heads
Loaded up with food and bread
Only to head west with an empty freezer
kept on westerly- even the old geezer
never to return with tuna fever

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
This thread begs the question, does anybody know of a sport caught tuna weighing over 100# from a private boat out of Oregon or Washington? How about over 150#? If not, when will the first one be landed, and by whom?

Come on Walt. There is nothing cool about a long lined fish... I know you'd agree with me.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
The fish can be cool fish even if the method used to catch them is not cool! I agree that the long line method of fishing is not cool. Better than drift nets though, those are the worst, the very worst.

Well sleuthed, Walt. I would be interested in hearing more about the economics of an Oregon boat fishing near Hawaii.

I seem to remember a guy put a 100+ BFT in the boat off the Columbia a few years ago.

One of our own dogs 103# I believe. Out of Astoria about 5 or so years ago by Big Shad Brad AKA Ugly Green.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
I do not know mister Green and so what I am about to say should be tempered by that, but as I recall at the time that large fish was caught, pictures were asked for and promised. The story was that there was not a camera present on the boat. That could be the truth. But having caught a fish like that off the oregon coast and not getting some pictures of it so show as proof and for bragging rights does not make sense. Lets face it. If the call went out that a fish like had been caught, there would and could have been ample cameras show up to document the catch. Where are the articles in the local papers about it. Sorry, as far as I am concerned it is urban ledgend. Until someone shows me a bigfoot in the back of their pickup I am not believing that one either. The big tuna might be true but so might bigfoot. Prove it!

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
I heard the story from a very reliable source, and believe it. It makes sense, as each year big fish are hooked. Perhaps a 102.6# fish can be brought to gaff after a 45 minute fight on albie gear. The larger fish just don't stop. We should be landing big fish each and every year.

...I'm big on research...I research everything so as not to get caught off guard...and from the research I've done on Albacore there is a good chance that below the Albacore are bigger tuna (Bluefins, Yellowfins and Bigeyes)...is this true?...I have no idea...but if this is the way it works off So Cal, I'm pretty sure it'll work here...and once I can get the hang of it (going out and coming back in one piece) I will probably try the techniques in this article...I mean fishing isn't really about luck is it?...

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
Since when did reports get locked out... whether true or stretched.
The Resourse managers put reports out that not true at all in my opinion we have always read posts of truth and untruth about everything from what we think we saw to MR's.
I think someone can research all they want, and good going Walter.
It just surprises me we need pampered or monitored that closely.
Lets say someone did lie, Why about a tuna head is beyond me.... but lets say they did. I don't anyone would head west because of it. The only thing that could happen is we get and emergency closer from over Feds on halibut and inshore bottom fish for some reason only they understand.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
   :lurk:
Dave .. this topic was discussed at length on this forum when it happened, which is long before you came here or got the idea that you were a big deal in offshore fishing. Not everyone wants to video tape or photograph every beating heart eaten, every stupid meat wasting gaff shot or every swing of the big orange hammer. For some of us it is about the tug on the line not boosting our fragile egos by one upping every one in sight.
It would have been satisfying to see the picture. Like many of us I trust Brad and take him at his word. He is one of the few who can tell me something about where fish are or what is happening and I will take it at face value and believe it. The fact that Charlie Prince, Wildhawg vouches for this amazing catch is the clincher.
"Bragging does not bring happiness, but no man brings a big fish home through the alley".
Whether you realize it or not you stand on the shoulders of giants when you trailer down here from the peoples republic of Washington. Most of them will never brag about what they are doing and many actually shun public attention. What they did and continue to do and what they have passed on to the rest of us mere mortals make fishing better for all of us.
Show some respect or lose what little remains of my respect for you personally.

Lying about fishing reports is grounds for dismissal from ifish. That is just one of the rules. Gas is too precious a resource to waste on a fictitious report.

It's a far cry different when a person says "lights out steelie bite on the upper Wilson" than when they say "Bluefin tuna head found in dumpster in Newport". There a considerable amount more investment and risk with offshore fishing, so when this popped up we felt an obligation to get more information from the OP before we let the thread continue. That's part of running the site. All it takes is one person heading outta Newport full speed ahead and finding out that the report was deceptive at best to make a problem. Would it be their mistake for putting too much into the report? Probably, but we still err on the side of caution. Plus if the OP did end up claiming that it was caught out of Newport (which he did not), then it would border on being a false report, which is not allowed here.

The OP was skant on his information at the start of the thread. He only said that heads were seen, not that the fish were caught out of Newport. Was there an attempt at deception? It's possible, but it's also hard to determine intent online. In the end I feel that Walter went above and beyond to do the footwork necessary to track down the truth in this matter, and his removal of the thread, and subsequent return of the thread, were entirely warranted.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
I saw Brad catch the state record shad as he was anchored next to me in the river at the time. He held it up so I could admire a dang nice shad, and it went in the fish box. It went to the freezer for crabbait. It was only a couple weeks later when the person who had the large shad crabbait decided to get it weighed. After drying out in the freezer for a couple weeks it still set a state record.
Brad is not about bragging, he is a dang nice guy and if he tells me he saw bigfoot. Then he saw bigfoot.
Brad didnt fish from a fancy glass boat with gold reels, it was an open aluminum sled called UGLYGREEN, (appropriately named) Brad could teach the gold reel crowd a thing or two about fishing any day of the week.
It might pay to get to know Brad, you might be a better fisherman for it someday.

I saw Brads pictures when I first joined. Whether or not he wishes to post them again is up to him.
I will strongly second Pilar and Rays sentiments regarding Brad and Charlie.
Neither one has anything to prove to me.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
'Uglygreen' is an Almar sounder. I laughed at this boat until I got a good look at it on the trailer.
It's not a sled, it is a bluewater work boat. Brad fished that boat far offshore with Wildhawg and often made me realize that I have a lot to learn about bluewater fishing.
Somewhere there is a picture taken from my boat of this boat in the fog off Depoe. One of the more memorable days chasing TUNA! with 'Uglygreen' as my wingman.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
Seems to me a few people got out of line on this one. Tracker, Pilar, and the Mods.
This post was locked because the guy who made the report is new. Thats it plain and simple.
Locking a post because a guy said he saw fish heads in a dumpster and asked about them?
Calling a guy out cause he dont have a picture?
Pretty well doing a personal attack with slander because a newer guy called out one of the good old boys?

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
Its fine with me what ever rules we need to abide by on ifish, it is not my place to say boo about anything.
It just kind of struck me funny.... the first thing that I thought of was, a few years ago I caught a 30 pound halibut just down stream from the Oyster company around the corner from Riverbend.
It was October and I was salmon fishing....this is the only one I have ever heard of caught like that.
What i could see happening today is if I posted such news. Is someone going to be calling my wife, family and friends to varify if Wak is lieing, and then when I am cleared, my report could be unlocked.
like Dave said... it will depend on gas prices ...... and wheather it is safe to release such a report. This about the funnest thread in a long time, you guys crack me up.
Maybe everyone less sees it differently....which is their business.... who really cares.
I think we need to go fishing.

It sounds like 3,000 miles out give or take. If your boat has the range then get after it.
257, can you introduce yourself with a fishing story? Welcome aboard.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
When this happened I believe there were pictures posted here. Then the bullitin board changed and the picture was lost.
Even I don't have pictures of tuna I caught 5 years ago or even salmon. What pictures I did have were either printed off or lost when my computer crashed a year ago.
Brad has explained this a few times on the SD board. Just know it did happen.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
Unpaid moderators. No good deed goes unpunished.
I for one think the mods / Walter did the right thing.
- Everyone itching for tuna.
- Lousy, dangerous ocean weather.
- Brand new guy posts "heads of big tuna in dumpster."
- Nobody knows brand new guy; no real name, no intro, no nuthin'
- Moderator sees the potential of...where the thread, and fishing plans, could go. Moderator decides to be prudent and call a "time out" to investigate.
- Moderator gets detailed answers; solves the story. Posts the results, unlocks thread.
- Peanut gallery starts throwing peanuts, second-guessing mods.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
Wow it does not pay to take a nap! I remember reading about this here. All I remember being said and asked was to see some pictures. None ever showed up. Thats all! I did not know it was an incident before I came here. That pictures were lost. Salt Walty says it is so, That I can believe. Still would be nice to see the pictures!
John..................... Not sure ....... I am enthusiastic John. Nothing more. I enjoy myself out there. I just want to share that with people. You dont like the videos or pictures, If I were you I would not look at them. I think I am something big out there? You are the first guy I ever talked to on the phone here at ifish. I was coming down to Depoe for my first tuna run in my new boat. You somehow got Roy to come down and give me some numbers in the parking lot around 2am. In my eyes that night you were the big guy. Thanks John! ............. I guess ever since someone videod a loin gaffing on your boat you have been upset. Best to get over it. I am nothing big out there. I am a small fry with a big mouth.
Do I believe they are out there? Heck yea! If I gave any other impression, that was not my intention. I believe twice they have been hooked on my boat. During the tournament at Garibaldi two years ago, Tuna Time hooked and was broken off on 130lb mono on one of those winches he fishes with. Fish went straight down.

But having caught a fish like that off the oregon coast and not getting some pictures of it so show as proof and for bragging rights does not make sense. Lets face it. If the call went out that a fish like had been caught, there would and could have been ample cameras show up to document the catch. Where are the articles in the local papers about it. Actually I posted pictures at the time on the orignal thread of the fish on the boat and on the dock. I got a buncha crud like the above post above about faked pictures and whatever... so I also the provided the doubters the phone number of Dave Rodgers (then owner of Free Willie bait and tackle in Hammond) who helped off load and butcher the fish for verifivation. Still couldnt satisfy some people so I gave up. Jennie erased the pictures a few years back during one of the early cleanups when Ifish was hurting for memory and I have never reposted them because I am sick of all this sort of garbage. It's a big reason why I stay out of the Salty Dogs forum for the most part anymore.
My ego just isn't big enough to play in this sandbox on most days.

You don't need a huge boat to get into some big fish.

Not upset at all, there is nothing for me to 'get over' .. just not happy with you questioning the veracity of someone I admire. Please get that straight. I don't dislike you Dave just some of the things you do. People look at you and say "What's going on with that fisherman?" I am also a fisherman and your conduct reflects on me and anyone else who fishes. Consider your attitude about fishing the canadian/washington border regarding daily limits for anglers and consider what anyone observing what you are doing might think. Is that so much to ask for?
As far as stupid gaff tricks go .. it's ok for someone with very little experience to treat the fish badly on my boat. We can teach those guys how to respect the fish we hunt and the water we hunt on and we do. Those who have had some experience generally show a little more respect for the animals we hunt. And BTW I do not watch the videos you make. Please keep doing it though ... someone is watching, somewhere.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
I guess I made the same wrong judgement on first glance. That is a stout boat that is properly equipped for offshore fishing. You provide the rain gear as it is a wet ride in rough water. The North river offshore boat based on Almar design has many of the features in hull design and outfit you find on 'Uglygreen'.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
Okay, okay guys. This has gone far enough. Both sides have said their piece and that is enough. Why we continue to argue about this 6 or so years later is beyond me. It's nearly the weekend. Festivities in Newport should be great for all that attend.
John, I still read your posts brother and I enjoy them and learn from them.
Dave, I watch the videos and laugh at the gaff or misgaff shots. and I know I am not the only one.
Now with that, I wish everyone a wonderful fun filled weekend. If you want to take out any anger or aggression you can be at my house 8am with a screw gun, hammer, pry bar.......I will be rebuilding my deck. Oh how fun.....................

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
A better picture of Uglygreen. Me and Charlie (Wildhawg) off on the tuna hunt from Depoe... yes that is a full size tote full of shaved ice and the blue cans in front of the center console held an extra 50 gallons of fuel.
Dang I miss that boat! Pretty much bullet proof, self bailing, self righting, and complete positive boyancy. You could roll the dang thing and it would turn right itself right side up and drain itself without any power. We would come back from 12+ hours offshore and still have 1/3 to 1/2 of the fuel we left the dock with. I always felt pretty safe aboard that boat. Plus it was fast and had a much nicer ride than most any windshield boat... if you didn't mind getting a little wet!!!

Brad, is there any way you can post those photos again? I know many of us would love to see them. That was before my time on ifish.

Just set your digital camera to macro mode, then take a picture of the picture in the frame. Just think how much it would help the local economy!

...I'm not saying it's a bad boat...I'm saying that I wouldn't be brave enough to go out in it...I'm flat out not comfortable with the idea of going out 30+ miles in that boat...and you guys think Albacore are the "chicken of the sea"... O.O

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
Posts like this get me excited.......
Currently working on the details for a few overnight trips with the 50 Wides to target some of these big fish, and you can be darn sure if we get LUCKY and actually hook and perhaps land a nice BFT we will have some pics to share. Did I mention the luck factor.
Oh, and for those of you who don't know Brad, if he says he caught it, he caught it. Period, no question about it.
Brad, wanna be part of the crew, you know the boat.

...actually, in this picture, it doesn't look too bad...hehehe...but I'm still a bit shy about going very far out in it...maybe in a few years I'd have the confidence, but not right now...

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
I've been watching this thread all day, and all I can say is WOW!
I'm pretty new to ifish, so I probably will catch crud, but you guys amaze me. This is a board that is supposed to be about being brothers of the sea. Its supposed to be about seeing a salty dog sticker at the marina and making a new friend.
I don't think I'd ever talk to or about a buddy like that. I mean if that guy hadn't posted about big heads in the dumpster, how would we have known that there was anything to look at? Who cares that so and so doesn't have a picture posted? Why attack each other over meaningless stuff?
And its not just this thread. Maybe its that the TUNA haven't shown up like we expect, but that is a bad excuse. This whole thread has been picking fights with each other for too long.
I know I'm new, and its probably not kosher for me to say these things but o well. If this is what I can start to expect from this board, I'll find another place to here fish stories.

Re: Bft Tuna In Dumpster At Newport
Alex- I imagine most folks are just not replying to this thread. It seems that every instance of "trying to help" usually rubs a guy the wrong way, and it goes off in a different direction. You are spot on about the missing TUNA!!! though, if they were out there, and fishable, this thread would have gotten a handful of replies and then slid off the front page forever.
So, stick around, and help spread the love of fishing stories. Nothing better than a good yarn of yesteryear while waiting for the first good fishing weather of the year.
Bob can correct me if I'm wrong, but last year even Odin had fish before July 1, and that was off the CR. 50 miles offshore, and only 7 fish, but it was June and we had TUNA!!! on board. This season is just a little late getting started, but it will get started, and then all the excitement will be be in fish reports, not fish heads.
