Default "Fishing" heritage discovered

I can't believe what I just found out.....My 78 year old mom was doing some research on her family. She finds out that one of her uncles, who was born in the 1880's, was not only a lawyer (which we already knew) but was a whaler! Yes he hunted whales! Although this was acceptable behavior back then, I'll still have to apologize next time I get close to a whale....

Mark - Before you get too close to that whale to appologize, you better make sure he isn't big and white!

John, there you go again being logical! I guess it feels a lot more "natural" to prey on cold blooded fish with small brains, than big swimming mammals that feed mother's milk to their young! Besides, remember that Star Trek movie where the whales actually communicate with the aliens and save the world (& the human race)? I like to think that maybe dolphins & whales are more connected than we think....No I'm not smokin anything; just waiting for summer like everyone else!

Oh and thanks for the reminder, Mr Melville.

BTW I did have one thought about great uncle lawyer/whaler. He's at the club smoking a cigar, and he says to his friends: "I'm only a lawyer to support my whaling habit."

Mark,
I was referring to the predatory activities practiced by some lawyers, not your justifiable act of risking your life in the ocean simply to catch a few fish to feed your family. Sometimes you just do what you have to do. I have to leave now to Garibaldi and internet blackout to work on my bouyant self-propelled omega-3 recovery platform. (fishing boat)

Oh sheesh, that went right over my fuzzy head! Maybe the problem is I know several very nice people who happen to be lawyers. OK, lawyers = sharks. Every one of them! (except mine & yours).

Any i-fish salty dog lawyers out there?

mark,
Why would you apologize for one predatory activity and not the other?

Believe it or not my Dad was a commercial lobsterman for a while and every year he got his liscense for bluefin tuna. His method of choice was the harpoon... never did get a chance to use it on a tuna but there is a story floating around about a couple of huge basking sharks that almost met their maker... Lucky for them they don't taste good or sell well
