Default good fly for Coastal Cutts and Crome?

I will be doing some fly fishing soon on coastal rivers such as the Trask, Wilson and maybe a few others...Primaraly the Wilson though!!..So my question is what is a good fly pattern for Cutts and Chromers?...If you have a pic of a good fly to use please post it...I am not good with fly names....Is there like a shrimp pattern that would be good?

Thanks for any info....

I'll bite in honor of the inventor of the fly. Wayne Doughton, former owner of Doughton's Hardware in Salem from the 50's until he retired in the 90's.

It is called a Doughton Special. No pictures but it is simple enough. Yellow yarn body, small red tail, white deerhair streamers. Troll slowly and jerk the streamer every 20 seconds or so for an erratic retrieve. Worked excellent on the Alsea for Bluebacks. Carry on the tradition.....

Hey I've got one I like, it's called a spider. Go to River city fly shop
and give a look I like the yellow body and gray hackel or the black and
white or the pink and white ones.

Now i'm pumped to go
Arnie.

Here's a link to pictures and tying instructions. Black and yellow bodies also work well.

If you want to do some face to face research I'm sure the guys at River City Fly Shop would love to teach and share all that they know about these flies. Those guys are great.

I fished cutts with a buddy a couple weeks ago for the first time and we did well with spruce flies, humpies, and tied down caddis.

All the flies above are good. Just want to throw in one more. The Grizzly Wolf. Tied in yellow, this dry fly attracts cutts from everywhere.

fyi - I stopped by River City today, and chatted with the guys there about the coastal cutts, they've got a large selection of reverse spiders there. I bought a couple and the supplies to tie my own.

they're super helpful and super friendly! I recommend a visit if you've got any questions.

I believe he might have called it a Female Coachman, and I have several. I'll try to remember to take a photo and post on here...He and my father in Law were best buds...

It was great to see Wayne Doughton get referenced on iFish. I worked for Wayne in High School and a summer or two in College. He taught me to cast and to tie. I always felt so fortunate to have learned so early from one of the classics.

The fly Wayne perfected was called the Female Coachman and it is still one of my "go to" flies for Sea Runs. The other is a Muddler. I will explain more on that later. I still tie at least a dozen every year for Sea Runs.

The fly pattern as tied by Wayne:

Hook: #6 1197b Eagle Claw
Thread: Black Nymo
Tail: Red Hackle Fibers
Butt: Green #2 Chenile
Body: Yellow #2 Chenile
Hackle: Brown tied Wet
Wing: White Deer Body hair - tied on thick
The key was the white deer body hair. It had to be tied on very thick. Wayne would laugh at my early attempts. You sacrifice a nice neat head but the pattern is effective.

To fish this fly we would use full sinking lines and short leaders - 3ft 5-6# tippet. Find likely looking water, (still deep pools close to tide) cast, let it sink a bit and then do a fast strip (10 inches) retrieve and at the same time flick your wrist of your rod hand to give the fly more action. Hard to describe but deadly. The reason for the amount of deer hair is these fish have teeth and they don't last long if you tie to sparsely. One key here….fish at first light or in shaded pools.

Not everyone likes to fish sinking lines and cutts do come up for a fly fished on top. That is when I fish the muddler with a dry line. Fish the head of riffles and fast lies. You never know when that steelhead might be there (right Potts!).

Anyway here are a couple of pics

One other resource that will give you some ideas on flies.
Check out Les Johnson's book "Fly Fishing for Coastal Cutthroat Trout"

I was wondering when someone was going to mention the Muddler. A great double-duty fly for cutts and steelies, and can be fished any number of ways: dry fly, streamer, wet fly, waking fly, etc.

Also, all the variations of Bucktail Caddis (different body colors, tied down or not, etc.) have a lot of those same versatile attributes.

My first sea run cut was cought on a yellow muddler. I'll also use a sparsely tied orange comet.
