Default This can\'t be good...

I'm changing the gear lube in my sportjet. Unfortunately, when I caught the old lube, it looks like I only had about 1/2 the case capacity of lube in there. It''s supposed to hold 25 ounces, and it looks like I got maybe a pint out. The oil looks OK, no water in it, and the engine runs fine, but...

Did it take the full 25 oz's when you filled it back up? If it did then either you have a leak or it just wasn't filled properly last time around. If it didn't then there's a lot of remaining old old that's not draining out.

Not much to do about it except keep a close eye on the level from here on out. Gearboxes are pretty tough. If the oil didn't look burnt you should be fine.

It took the whole 25 oz when I refilled it, and the oil looks and smells fine. Clean lube came out the vent when I refilled it. I pumped the old oil out from the vent, so I'm pretty sure I got all the old oil out.

I'm thinking the mechanic only put a pint container in when I had it serviced. He also didn't put the required washer on the fill screw. gr-r-r-r. I suspect things are fine, but I didn't need the worry. This is why I like to do some things myself.

I had the same kind of issue when first servicing my Mercury 4 stroke. It was shy quite a bit of oil. I filled it with the proper amount and things seem to be OK.

My guess is if you have no water in the oil and it doesn't smell burned you are probably OK. At 5,000 rpm I am sure that your impeller would be quick to notify you if it was running with insufficient lube! Probably should replace that seal on the rear spline (just to be safe) near the stator if that is the section you are talking about. the forward oil reservoir doesn't really provide an easy escape route.

Note...I am way over my head with this advice. I have taken my sportjet apart only twice for regular lube service. You should probably seek counsel from the Boat Doc !
