Default Diagnose this one.

1994 Nissan Altima, 150K miles, regular oil changes and Air filter etc.
Had some fuel injector issues a while back which had similar sputtering etc, but it was intermittant and I could tell that at times there was partial detonation and was able to get a new injector on the cylinder that was ginging me grief.

Recently, she started to sputter again, and it was a different kind of sputter, and I swear I can hear a flapper or a valve component click when the sputtering occurs...

I think it is a timing issue... chain or belt needs replacement...

Just to weed out fuel issues, i replaced the fuel filter and put nearly a full tank of chevron mid grade.... no improvement....

You folks think this sounds like a good diagnosis?

If it sputters intermittently, I'm going to vote to rule out timing belt. If you're pretty certain it's not a fuel issue, it could be the distributor.

If you did not have the timing belt done at 105,000 miles, you may want to get that done sooner rather than later. For sure.....

We had a older Volvo that had sputtering issues. It took a while to diagnose, but it ended up being the fuel pump relay.

Could be the timing belt tensioner you're hearing....wife's 96 Maxima was the same thing. It had a death rattle.

New spark plug wires on it about 18 months ago, along with a new distrib...

It is getting worse... here is a clue,

It seems to run ok at about 1700-2200 rpm on the flats, but if I throttle up on it it starts to make that hickkupinng and I swear I can hear a mechanical component (sounds like a flat piece of metal flapping down against something) sounds like i am in trouble if i dont get my bike working right,
and soon

Kind of sounds like the flapping that a pigeons wings make as you scare them up at the park.... flap flap flap hickup hickup.......
(the engine, not me!)

Have you had the timing belt replaced? Your older Nissan engine is likely a zero tolerance (interference) engine, which means that a dead timing belt can destroy the engine.

Timing belts and interference valvetrains together spell disaster when failure occurs. Valves drop into the combustion chamber where they collide with piston tops. Bent valves or cylinder head damage will result.

Not cool.

Fire is simple: heat, oxygen, fuel. We've ruled out heat with the plug wires and distributor. That leaves oxygen and fuel. We've ruled out oxygen with the new air filters. That leaves fuel. Start at one of the fuel system and work your way to the other end.
One of the few things I ever learned from my brother: replace the cheapest parts first.

I dont think that has a belt. I'm pretty sure its a chain. When the chains go its not good. It may be the chain tensioner. Have someone step on the gas while you listen. See if noise is coming from front of motor.

Have you checked compression / leak-down yet?

How did the plugs look?

I was thinking it might be the brake light fluid but you might be on to something here.

Have the same car. Bought it with 150000 miles on it had to put new timing belt on her because it has a plastic guard around it and it was broken. Just had the same sputtering going on it at 1630000 miles. One of my feul injectors went bad. Replaced it, runs good again.

You're kidding right? It's a Nissan, it's barely past break-in at 150k. It'll easily do twice that and only leak as much as a domestic with 60k on it at that.
