Quest for Shamrock - the Conclusion
Well, we did it! After lots of info gathered here and on another site, Andy and I zipped down to Half Moon Bay on Friday to look at a 26' Shamrock Hard Top - the Aqua Hero.
It was a long 3 days so I'll just hit the highlights:
Saturday we met the owners and headed out for a test ride. The conditions outside the bay were pretty comparable to what a "normal" day is for us here in the NW, so we were pleased to find that she performed quite nicely. We headed back into the harbor and did some mock docking trials using anchor bouys. Other than having to overcome the urge to try to turn her to starboard in reverse (cuz she won't), we found that it wasn't too hard to use the wind to our advantage to put her neatly on the "dock".
In the afternoon, the Marine Surveyor met us at the dock and gave her the once-over (and then some). He had nothing but praise for the Aqua Hero and was amazed that she spent her life moored, rather than trailered - just one of many indications of how well the previous owners maintained her.
Yes, I said "PREVIOUS".
700 miles of bad road led us home without incident.
And here she is:
The surf boards weren't part of the deal, but lots of other gear was - downriggers (both electric and manual), electric crab pot puller, Rupp outriggers are just a few of the amenities. The bonus part is that she's totally ready to fish. But we'll be taking some time getting to know her better before taking her out on Big Blue.
Thanks everyone for your help, advice, encouragement and constructive feedback!

Diesel at the Depoe gas dock is usually alot lower than on the road at the gas station. It was last summer anyway.
Fair winds and following seas and I hope she treats you well.

Re: Quest for Shamrock - the Conclusion
Congrats! Jen and Andy! That's a great looking ride. Time pretty quick here to get some TUNA! blood on her....
Question....why no reverse to starboard? Something in the design? Just curious since I am unfamiliar......

Re: Quest for Shamrock - the Conclusion
Hey Paul! Long time no see. She's a keel hull with a straight shaft and rudder. I'm no expert, but from what I understand the prop direction counters the rudder. It's going to take some getting used to, but she maneuvers very precisely to port, both forward and in reverse. Her previous owner showed us how he used that as an advantage. It was pretty impressive. If I hadn't known he only had one screw, I'd have thought for sure that I was seeing dual props in action.

Nice boat, love the cut of the cabin, very handsome. Looks like a low burn rate vessel for sure.

Direct drive singlew screw boats (and ships) have to deal with prop walk. They can't turn the drive system like I/Os, OB and jet boats.:

Re: Quest for Shamrock - the Conclusion
Another great thing about the boat is with the engine mounted mid ship it gives us an 8 ft by 6.5 ft fishing platform. Plenty of room for this big guy and some gear. I now will have room to do the " Tuna Dance"

Re: Quest for Shamrock - the Conclusion
Man, it must be challenging to have a new boat like that and a nasty ocean.
Congratulations to you two. It looks like a fantastic ride and a serious tuna killing platform.

Re: Quest for Shamrock - the Conclusion
"Challenging" - I like that word
Actually, it is somewhat helpful. It will keep us from venturing out before we're fully ready. I know the boat is worthy, but still, she's new to us. Like any new relationship, we want to get to know eachother a little better before we get in "too deep"

Re: Quest for Shamrock - the Conclusion
Most of the "steering" you do when backing up, is by using the forward gear. Sounds funny huh. But yes.....if you want the stern to go towards starboard, you "bump" the boat in forward towards port, which swings the stern to starboard. Then you hit reverse and give it some throttle...even with the wheel still to port. This is called "back and fill." It might take 5 times of going forward-reverse, but it swings around.
The reason for all this is that..... a rudder causes steerage by having water flow over it. So with the prop in forward gear, you obviously get good steerage because the prop is pushing lots of water over it. In additio, the pivot point is 1/3 of the way back from the bow. You lose this effect when in reverse.
