Question Pro-Troll speed indicator

I have used nine all year and love it. This last trip in the boat the line was cut. I still have the ball but don’t remember how much line should be in the water. Does anyone know?

Thanks ET

This is interesting. I checked the pro-troll website and the speed indicator is not to be found, or even mentioned?????

I use a small hiking type gps that I bought at Bi-Mart for about 80$ and it appears to be very accurate but likes to eat batteries.

Any idea where I can find info on the pro-troll unit?

At that same store, I picked up a 12v plug and wired it into my boat for my GPS car adapter and the kids' portable DVD player (batteries get expensive).

Elk Talker, just went out and measured mine. 46" - thought I set it up according to the instructions , which I obviously can't find. Any consolation (sp) I checked it against my GPS and it was right on so that length must be ok. I also think mine is great except when it gets in the way pulling up to the dock in a 14 foot aluminum. I am always afraid I will loose the screw that hold it into the mount.

The speed indicator you are referring to is made by Luhr Jensen & Sons, P.O. Box 297, 400 Portway Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031. The length of the dacron line from the eye of the weight to the water line is 40". If anyone needs copies of the instructions that come with it pm me and I can scan and email them for you. They also have a customer service hot line 1-800-535-1711.

They are available at Sportsmen's Warehouse as well as on the internet. Cost is somewhere around $45.00. Some folks feel that they are just as accurate or more so than a gps.

One thing I like about it, is even if your line is not the correct length or the unit it's self has been bumped you can still use it. As soon as you find a speed that works you just look at what speed the indicator says and hold that speed.

Another is gps slow to catch up with my speed changes and the speed indicator is immediate.

Is your gps part of your fishfinder and if so does it have an external antenna? It should be responding very quickly.

I use a hand held Magellen bought at bi-mart that is extremely sensitive and responds almost instantaneous when I change speed. In fact, when I move it from one side of the boat the other it actually records that speed. I noticed on Sunday when I moved it from one side of the boat to the other the reading jumped to 5mph as I moved it then settle back to 1.3 when I set it down. Great unit.

ps. the tracking screen said I was picking up 8 satellites (Suttle lake)

Your gps sounds great. My gps is part of my fishfinder and has an internal antenna. Your Magellan sounds great. I have two hand held units but have never tried them on the boat.

I guess I never will. I have the Garmin Rino 530Cx that my wife got me last year for Christmas and she just informed me that I'm never to take it on the boat. Something about hand held electronics and water and my history, I don't know.
