Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
Ok. With the new limits on bottom fish I'm thinking that $80 is pricey for a bottomfishing charter that may only net me 5 fish. Sooo, does anyone out there fish the Garibaldi jetty with regular success that is willing to throw some bait/tackle, location, time of day, etc. tips my way. I've got a wife and kid that love to fish and that are prob going to be dissapointed in a short charter with a reduced limit so I'm thinking we could spend some time on our own on the jetty. Also, what are the odds and techniques to target lings off the jetty? A fat ling would make their trip!

Though I haven't had much luck in seeing many ling cods pulled from that jetty, there are a lot of the smaller sized rock fish you could fish from in the barview jetty park.
I have gotten some good luck with green ling, try sand shrimp and a 2 or 3oz sinker with size 2 hooks.

Thanks for the tip! So do you cast your sandshrimp out away from the rocks and let it sit or do you keep in close in and risk losing your weight? Also, if I remember correctly there is a smaller jetty on the south side of the inlet. Is that worth a boat trip across the bay to fish?

Re: Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
This time of year you'll catch mostly black sea bass off the Barview Jetty. They are caught just on the open water side of the sea grass and jetty rocks. The lings are in the thick of the snaggy stuff. I bobber fish for them, hook a few and have yet to land a keeper. Check in at the Barview Jetty Store and buy what's working that day.
I've also caught silvers off the jetty using a bobber setup with herring. That's a little later in the summer when the baitfish swim in with the tide. If you cast into the dimpling water, fish on.

Re: Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
#1 thing is tide - hour before and after slack is the go to to time. A lot of people prefer high slack, but there are fish at low slack too. It really makes a difference.
We just throw out shrimp - not too far - and use those slinky sinkers, fewer tangles, Others are more expert, some people use lures or float bobbers. There hav been some great threads, search on 'jetty'.
Also, if you go by Lyster's (on the highway between Garibaldi and the jetty) Sherry is really helpful and has good shrimp.

If you don't want to spend the cash on the shrimp, you can go pump some at the coast guard station. They are real easy to pump and you can get enough pretty quickly.

Re: Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
Thanks all for the good advice! I can tell I'll be trying out a few techniques on this trip! Sounds like going to Lyster's would be worth the price of shrimp if I got some good pointers from Sherry but Chow, could you explain what you mean by pumping for sandshrimp? It sounds a bit obscene but since we are going to be staying near the coast guard station I wouldnt mind "pumping" a few for the experience. How would one do it if one was so inclined?
Also, I have heard that black bass and other jetty fish like to hit lures and swimbaits on the surface at night. Anyone have experience at this?

Thanks for the site Skiffman! That looks like something that would entertain my 11 year old as well. Dont know where I'll find a shrimp gun but I may just try a clam gun or a good old fashioned shovel. Thanks again!

Re: Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
Do look into "grub" type lures you would use on bass/crappie fishing.
I've gotten a lot of luck with 1.5" florescent pink or orange grubs. You would probably get larger fish using larger grubs like 2"-3" in size. If you can get through the floating weeds, you should get into the strike zone. Watch for the slippery rocks.

Re: Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
The jetty rocks get very slippery, so be careful. I grew up fishing the rocks of Southern California, and consider myself a skilled "rock hopper". But I fell so hard on the Barview Jetty that I haven't been back to try it again. Specifically, it is the green mossy slime in the splash zone that is the problem. When it gets wet, either from rain or spray, it is as slippery as ice.
Be very, very careful.

Re: Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
Excellent advice about being safe. Especially since I will have my 11 year old son with me. We will be wearing life jackets and I'm going to bring my felt soled wading boots. Hopefully that will help as well. I've got lots of grubs so I should be set there. Let me know if theres anything else you all can think of that might help us out there. Thanks again!!

Re: Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
You can find a shrimp gun at Joes most of the time, or even that Tillimook sporting goods store right there in tillimook, It will pay for itself in very short order, and just fallow the directions on the video link. If you take 12st to the left right as you start to go up hill heading north out of garibaldi there is a crabbing dock there, well when the tide is out there is a little sandy cove right there that exposes itself, just find the holes in the sand and start pumping, you wont be able to miss the holes as there will be millions of them.
Good luck

Re: Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
If you are tageting lings either a sliding bobber or dead drift a small herring not shrimp.

Re: Garibaldi Jetty advice anyone?
Find out the tide and fish really hard when the tide gets to the lowest or at the highest...that's usually when there is the least amount of current.

Great link Stinkbait! Looks like I'm headed to Home Depot for parts. Noticed your from Hermiston. Going to be in your neck of the woods soon and might hit the CR for Sturgeon or bass but someone said trolling for shad is alot of fun. You have any experience/tips you would be willing to share? Never caught shad before. Heard there are huge numbers in the CR right now.
Thanks for the herring/bobber tips and tide advice also guys!
