Default Idaho discovers Tuna.

Just before i started my x-mas break from teaching 8th gr. art, I had begun getting interested in catching a tuna . Your talk of strikes like train wrecks got me going. Over break i called my uncle who happens to live in Fortuna Calf. He is in very poor health(heart transplant 14 years ago, a rescent kidney transplant, a fused neck, and two strokes). He could hardly shut up about Albicore fishing. He has gone with a friend for many years out of Eureka(sp?). He said they usually go between 15 and 30 miles out .He also talked of the blue waters ,sea life and lots of fight, out of those fish. I started to feel bad about talking to my uncle who (i thought)was too crippled up to go out for tuna anymore. I finally ask if he thought he could still land one ,. OH,NO PROBLEM,was his response. So it looks like im going to try and take him out to chase tuna around the end of July. Then, ill be in Ilwaco the 8th of August thru the 12th or 13th. Im not sure if its possible to become a tunaholic before you actually catch one , But , i do have a very addictive personality and i love to fight tough fish. So, i believe im considered a high risk person. I would love to have some of you let me tag along ,if possible , while im in your area. Some how Santa knew about my new found interest and brought me a nice set of Ugly S. Tigers and two Pen 330' s. Santa is awsome.... I havent made any reservations for a place to stay in August , but if that looks like a good bet for a tuna trip with you all, i will go a head and make some . Ill drive down and meet you to tuna fish. Does that sound doable? id. painter

Id Painter, just watch this forum from about mid July on. We trailer sailors usually go out from Depoe Bay and a few from Newport or Astoria.

But I guarantee you'll see somebody trying to instigate a trip on just about any calm day all summer. It's that fun.

Looking forward to seeing you all bloody and crazed.

Thanks for the reply Pilar, where do you fish out of, mostly, Depoe, Newport or where else,Tillimook, maybe? Im willing to meet you all whenever and where ever. Ive never caught a tuna and Ive already been restricted (by my wife) . Im only allowed to mention Albicore (tuna) twice per day,in her company. Im not sure but is this an early sign of addiction? The word Albicore seems to just pop up in most of the conversations i take part in. id. painter

Hey Idaho, I used to live on Clark Street.
I'm not sure if my boat will be able to make a wake large enough to attract those sea bullets but I'm gonna give it a shot.
Let us know when you plan to be here and someone should be able to get you onboard.

Kurt, I thought you were through Tuna fishing on Threemuch? Broke my heart when you said that. Glad to see you have come to your senses. Wish I'd have been there on the first trip. I have a lot to learn...

Painter, it's hard to reserve dates for forays on the ocean around here, you may have to go on semi short notice. You've got to have seas that cooperate on days when the warm water is within range. Also be aware that being 30 miles offshore in a 20 ft. boat isn't for everyone, especially if you're new to the ocean.
Last year I only got out once due to only being able to go on the weekends and it was a marginal day, not this year, I'll be playing hookey when necessary.
Hope to see ya out there.

Ray-
It will take you all of about 15 minutes to learn the subtle nuances of killing albacore. And your C-Dory will slaughter them.

Range is definitely a problem on my boat, but definitely won't be on yours.

I have to agree with Kurt ... Just find the tuna and they'll take
care of hooking themselves!!

My first trip out (oh, soooo many years ago!) I was a total
greenhorn. A couple of my buddies from Pacific City told me how to
rig my boat and lines. I followed the guys out to the spot ...
which was out about 22 miles that year ... and dropped my gear into
the water. WOWZERS!! Non-stop action for the entire day!!
My (then) 8 year old son and I boated 42 fish that day with and
average weight of just a hair over 19 lbs!!

YMMV. It took us several trips out (over the course of several
years) to hit 42 fish in one day again!! My best catch was last
season when I caught 58 fish, but the average was only about 17 lbs.

Still haven't broken the 1000 lbs. mark yet ... but I have a good
feeling about the summer of 2003!!
