Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
Alright, I ran this by Jen and she thinks it's o.k. so now I need everyone's feedback and ideas. I want to create some Salty Dog shirts and hats. Of course any proceeds will go to Jen/Ifish, not to me.
Here are a couple of ideas I had for the logos. Tell me what you think and let me know if you have something else that might be better.
Once we finalize the logo and lettering I'll get some prices and run them by everyone.
Also, maybe we could get some stickers made?

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
I'm in for hat, t-shirt, sweat shirt, and I would love to have a flag. Flags would really make identity easy. I like the second of the two samples.

Make sure they're nice and white so the TUNA blood shows up real good!
I think somebody on the main board is in the t-shirt business. Maybe you could post and see.

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
I like the #2 illustration and would pop for a couple of XX Tshirts and a hat. I never get too far out on the big lake, but I do run out far enough to be considered salty.
At least my wife thinks so.......

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
I think a "flag" would be a great idea...a way for us to recognise each other from a distance, better than the stickers. Maybe a flag on a stick that clamps on...similar to the OSU and UO flags that go on cars?
A thought, I am proud to be associated with this group and would gladly fly a flag say so!

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
I like the flag idea as well. I'd go for a shirt as well with the 2nd being my choice. I think the flag would help everyone spot fellow I-fishers out on the big pond. I have the stickers but they are hard to see when your out there keeping a safe distance from other boats.

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
Cool, I'll try to get some samples made up and maybe we can show them at the next TA meeting.
Everyone seems to agree on the second example so I've tweeked it a bit because I didn't like the centering. I've got another idea on how to do the hats and I'll post a copy as soon as I can. I printed out an 8 1/2 x 11 1/2 landscape version to get an idea what a flag would look like and it looks really cool! How big of a flag should I look into getting? I'm thinking no bigger than a sheet of paper. Also, I'm going to check on vinyl for durability.
In regards to the quality of hats, I am right there with you. I'm a hat person so I definately won't use crappy hats.

I vote for the second one too.
I'd like a flag for my boat, when I finally get it running right .
It might be a while before I can afford them though...
Let me know when you have prices etc...

Just a hair bigger on the flag corrirod. Say 10x13 or 10x14. IMHO.

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
I would buy anything with that printed on it. T Shirt, Hat, sticker, flag, burgee.
I like the second one better. You know, if you make a burgee, that can usually get you a free transient slip at any yacht club, if you are willing to fib and tell them that the salty dogs are your yacht club in some other harbor.

Hey we really need a tuna flag too. Can't find them in the store.
The second one works for me. Did anyone E-mail my mate? She has a talent for logos.

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
John,
From the book, Piloting Seamanship and Small Boat Handling by Charles F. Chapman a complete illustrated course on the operation of small boats supplemented by hundreds of problems, questions and answers. 1996-67 45th Edition in Hard Back (found in the cuddy of my new to me boat) In chapter 22, Flag Etquette pp 358-359 states Yacht Club Burgee, generally triangular in shape, sometimes swallow tail. Flown from the bow staff of mastless and single masted vessels (foremost truck of vessels with two or more masts); at the main truck of yawls and ketches. Burgee may be flown under way and at anchor. It is, however, permissible to substitute the private signal for the burgee on single-masted yachts without bow staff when under way.
Later in the same chapter past Chief Commander Wm. K. Anderson of the United States Power Squadrons who served through World War 1 as acting CQM in immediate charge of all flags and signals, on both domestic and foreign stations, and through World War II as Navigating Officer in charge of all the above and all etiquette and protocol as well said "Now as to the shapes of flags, etc., I suppose the word flag means anything along these lines. Sort of a generic name. But when you get into details, then flag means a rectangular device. Specifically a pennant means a triangular flag. Now this burgee business comes from medieval times, and particularly from the period of city-states and feudal times. It is my understanding that they used to cut a peice out of the flag of the head man, to show that he wasn't there, but the fort was being held by his retainers. When I first broke in on this flag protocol 50 years ago you used to hear it this way: Burgeed flag, or burgeed pennant, and it seemed to mean a notched flag or pennant. I think we must have just become lazy over the years and don't use it properly any more. I don't think there is any precedance between a burgeed flag and a burgeed pennant. Probably the burgeed flag came first in actual practice. The Detroit Yacht Club has a burgeed pennant. To me it is the DYC Burgee (leaving off the pennant). But to give some idea of shape, I'd call one a burgee, and the other a pennant. I don't think use has anything to do with shape. In other words, it is not a burgee just because many private flags are that shape. And it isn't a club pennant just because many clubs use that shape."
O.K., so if you want to be technical it should be a pennant but in practice it could be considered a burgee and it should be either triangular or swallow tail in shape.
Whew, that is a lot of typing, but thanks for the opportunity to get back into that book. It has a ton of valuable information on everything related to piloting a small boat in and around the ocean and I would highly recomend it. The book is out of print and the latest printing I have been able to find was 1989 and the first edition was in 1922. Get one if you can.

Pilar,
I saw tuna flags but can't remember where.
When I find them again I email you or PM.
I found some old Japanese Feathers and some featherless heads, its amassing what my grandfather had (I don't remember him ever talking about albacore). My sons roosters look like they're molting now

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
Corrirod,
The number 2 design gets my vote as well. However, I don't know as though I like the choice of dogs. Is that really the "saltiest" dog available? I am sure that I'd get at least one shirt. Great idea and workup, thanks for the effort.
Mr. Fisherman,
WOW!!! I just learned more about flags, pennants, and burgees than I thought was possible. I count myself humbled in your presence
So for a little practice, the Coast Guard at Newport went from one penant on Wednesday morning to two penants today, and then on to a flag this afternoon. It is howling out there right now.

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
Several years back, I found the 62nd Edition hard-cover of Chapman Piloting at the bookstore in the Factory Mall at LC. It was an easy $20, half off the cover price. This is the other bible that everyone should have.
I did a search for "Chapmans Piloting" at amazon.com, and sure enough it is shown as out-of-print. But change the search to "Chapman Piloting" and you will find the 63rd Edition for $31.50. Everyone seems to call this book "Chapman's Piloting" rather than the true title, and I just did the search the way I always hear it.
Wonderful stuff in this "Bible"!

Or maybe a small Ifish logo (like the sticker, but smaller) on the front and the large salty dog logo on the back.... that could be cool.

Re: Salty Dog Hats/Shirts?
Pilar - Boaters World (formerly Outer Banks) has all the Billfish/Tuna flags. I actually saw an Albi flag a couple weeks ago but can't remember which catalogue. It's red on white, I like the regular Tuna better (Bue on white).

A burgee is a pennant that is the symbol for a yacht club. Basically a triangle flag.
