Boat Shares
A friend and I have been discussing for the last year or so the idea of getting about 4 or 5 reliable, responsible, competent hard-core fishermen together and buying a big boat.
I am thinking that for an initial investment of around 15 K each, and ongoing costs of about 1 K per year each, a group of 5 could have almost unlimited access to one heck of a fishing machine that individually they could never afford.
This is our dream: Buy an old Captains Gig because there are lots of guys that can work on the diesels from that boat, retro it, and dock it at South Beach.
Everyone would have to have a slush account that could be drawn on for routine and unexpected maintenance, moorage fees, etc.
Some of the gear that would belong to the boat would be Crab Traps, some tuna gear, survival suits, Radar and Gps. We would put a fuel usage meter in it, and you would be responsible to re-fill the boat anytime you used it. If the fuel dock is closed when you come in, the fuel cost comes out of your account.
Reading Sturgn's post brought this idea to mind again, and I was wondering if any of you might have experience with this, what are some of the things to watch out for, what are some potential legal issues, etc.,etc.
