Reel?? For new Tiger UG Stick
For Christmas, a buddy gave me a new Tiger Ugly Stick.
What reel makes the perfect combo? I know this is a great Sturg/But rod and I suspect it's also a tuna tamer.
I'd go used too if anyone has something they'll part with.
Thanks

Re: Reel?? For new Tiger UG Stick
You can get a SG 50H for 90 at tackledirect.com They are great reels and feel smoother and retreive faster than the 50 h.

I'm pretty darned fond of my Penn Senator 4/0.
Pilar got me the wide model for my b-day. It sits nicely on my yellow po'.

Re: Reel?? For new Tiger UG Stick
I've gone out and looked at what's been suggested, but none of them came correctly built (lefted handed reel.) Will a Penn 321 do the trick?

Re: Reel?? For new Tiger UG Stick
I started using the 321's this year for deep-water halibut and they worked fine. They might not last as long as some of the others but for the price (especially on sale) I think they are good enough. Make sure you put loctite on the freespool lever screw before you use them.

Re: Reel?? For new Tiger UG Stick
I heard you want to stay away from the level wind models for tuna. Something about the level-wind drive mech failing. Any comments on this???
I have a 330 and two 320's that are rigged on tiger sticks. I also have a 114H with one peice frame upgrade with the electra-mate 612H that I use for Halibut. I will probally dis-mount the 114H for tuna but I know my buddy wants to use his 330 gti if possible.

50-h. A friend, who is.... hard on gear has several different hog reels. The 50-H has not been rebuilt in the bottom of the boat. Others have.

Re: Reel?? For new Tiger UG Stick
That stuff about an albacore being able to smoke a level wind is bull. A 330 GTi can handle any albacore. The dog does wear out though, so make sure it is fresh before you go out after tuna. If the level wind gets off the line wind, you will lose gear next strike. And who needs a level wind anyway? Someone who can't pay attention to how the line is going on the reel.
Anyway, I am a penn man, and the most versatile reel I know of is the jigmaster. And that's what I would reccomend. 330 Gti for level wind or a Jigmaster 500.
What's this about a left handed reel? Ever notice that serious saltwater gear isn't made left handed? Learn to use righty gear. You can switch hands to cast. That said, there is a jigmaster 500 for lefties.

Re: Reel?? For new Tiger UG Stick
I have used Shimano's, Daiwa's, Penns, Ambassadeurs. Then I purchased the Accurate Reels. I have (2) Accurate Boss 270's and (1) Accurate Boss 665-HM. They are the finest reels I have ever owned, PERIOD. I use the 270's for albies, chinook, bottom fish and silvers. I use the 665 HM for albies, halibut and gators. They are the smoothest reels I have ever used and all have a lever drag. I will be ordering the smaller Accurate Boss 197's for steelhead and chinook. They work. PERIOD. I own close to 75 reels and these are at the top of the reel chain for me. E-mail me if you have any questions.

Re: Reel?? For new Tiger UG Stick
Thanks for the LW info Kurt. Nice to know I have back-up gear and I'm sure Chinook_Hunter will be happy to know he doesn't need to buy another reel.
