Default Fishing Around Newport this weekend (report)

My wife and I are going away for the weekend. 1st time we've left our daughter over night with some else.....

DIDN'T HAPPEN! sICK KID AND WIFEY. Those of you who gave me some tips told me to update on the trip. I didn't want to be the guy who didn't do that so...now you know. I will use your tips in the future for sure. Thanks for taking the time.

I ended up doing a little beach cleanup on a favorite stretch of the Columbia. I walked to my spot and started to do some reading in the sun. It's a good spot to just kick it. My daughter, wife and dog were all hanging out, when my dog starts walking all goofy. I walk over and check her out. There were several feet of mono wrapped around her legs. Made me sick to my stomach...so I cut the line off her legs, and went in search of the pile..considering she had a line running about 20 feet off her back legs. I get to the source and it's a great spot...with a rod holder built out of rock...and a nice neat pile of line. There were sections only a few inches long and several super long pieces. It looked to me like some jack a$$ backlashed and cut out the knots leaving the cuttings right where they lay. Along with 2 empty packages of hering. Makes me sick what some people do without regard for mans best friend or the birds, or ducks, or geese, or fish, or beavers, or otters, or sealions, or......

I encourage you to bring a bag when visiting the river...to clean up. It's not your office, so we can't put up signs reminding your co-fishers that mom isn't around to pick up after us.

It was a great day...I just had to get that off my chest....cool.

Happy Fishing,

Jeff

Good Fishing,

Jeff

You've got some good incoming tides...go crabbing. Also can jetty fish through high slack...best is a hike down from the lighthouse onto the north, but watch the waves and don't go too far out...
Also try calling Newport Marina...867-4470.

Bill....you rock! Thank you. I just went on Mapquest and found a creek that runs right through town. Big Creek...searched the archives and found others asking questions about it. Called the hatchery and they've got fish showing up according to the recorded message a week ago....but where is the hatchery?? Called the chamber of commerce and they know nothing about it but Lucy lives right by the big creek reservior..her hubby fished for trout there, but doesn't go for the big fish.

If I were to fish the jetty, what would I use? Fly rod?? bobber and prawns, eggs...??

FF, I think the Big Creek and Hatchery that is referred to here on Ifish is east of astoria. Thats quite aways from Newport. You might want to call'em again and ask where they are

That number has just a recorded message and no option to leave a message or talk to anyone. Talked with a buddy on the phone yesterday and he said the same thing.

thanks for the PM's and all the information. Love this place we call ifish!

Looks like I might be hitting the jetty. Time to try something new!

The tidewater of the Siletz is only a short drive north from there, but you would need to drive up river a few miles to get to good river access. Look for the alsea & siletz river page on the Ifish home page for a map

Beaver 1.....did that...looks good..what a great map! Looked at the forecast and regs...all looks to be on my side for some nice winter steelhead action!! Thanks for the advice...now I've got so many options.....

Yesterday I thought I'd just take my rod and get it wet wherever there was current...but now that I've asked the ifish guru's I'll have a good chance at hookin up!!

Thanks for everyones help..truly the best fishin' site on the planet....thanks Jennie
