Re: Santa likes tuna
Hey Rick, Merry Christmas. The answer needs a qualifier. Since this is the extra-wide version of the 4/0, the Accurate frame will definitely make a difference because it prevents the twisting you would see over time (with the std. frame bars) if you really grind on it for halibut & tuna. Also, this frame aligns the spool perfectly and allows you to cast with 4 - 16 ounce jigs in a way that you never could with the std setup. So is it "worth it"? Well, we salty dogs easily justify more ridiculous things don't we!
By the way, did Santa bring anything cool for the nauti Bait Boy? See ya...........Mark

It doesn't mater if it helped he wanted it
I looked at new 113H reels and they have a solid base like a Newel. The parts diagram shows the new 114H with a solid frame like an Accurate frame.

Re: Santa likes tuna
Yea Mr Fish, you weren't just on his list, you got his sleigh! How did he get home? That IS the gift that will keep on giving....
Hey Keta, Penn finally wised up and started putting one piece frames on the new models (like you say: partial on the 4/0, full on the 6/0). Too bad they had to let Accurate & Newell invent it first. They didn't want to change for "a few" west coast customers.
Time for my hourly dose of Christmas cookie & chocolate.....

Re: Santa likes tuna
For you Keta: a pictorial history of the Penn 6/0 special (a.k.a. 114H)
From the top: (1) The lovable original, with round tube supports, and bronze spool (which can take more force than the aluminum); (2) Around 1990 or '91, went to front & back flat-plate supports & aluminum spool (option); kept the top round tube ("gee, everyone is putting these Newell spools & supports on their Penn reels; we better copy them.") (3) Within last year or so: One piece frame, and newly designed clamp. The copy (a la Accurate) is complete. Also lightened up the red pigment. Any guesses why? Tuna blood blending in better? Time for more cookies.....

Re: Santa likes tuna
Pretty reels. Mine are all older. I wish they still made the 349.

Re: Santa likes tuna
Christmas is good!
Jen and I exchanged gifts. I'm not sure how it happened but we each ended up with G Loomis rods. The same exact one in fact. My old friend the HSR 932C is back on the boat and look out salmon and sturgeon. Yes one rod does it all.
Now all I have to do is find a few more 50H Diawa reels on E-bay. They quit making old reliable here recently and replaced it with a new model S50h. I'll let you speculate what the the 'S' stands for. I was not impressed.
Now if we could just get through the refinish work on various wood parts on the boat. I think my friend 'Puffin' is a pretty smart guy. He refuses to have anything on his boat that needs to painted or tightened. It's all aluminum and all welded together. I like wood, don't get me wrong, but the maintenance is an annual chore.
Happy Holidays.

Re: Santa likes tuna
A BIG thank you to Keta - I don't know if I could have gotten John the right rod without you!
Imagine my surprise when I found that John had gotten me the same pole! Can't wait to try it out!
I must have done something right this year... John was too modest to mention that he spoiled me rotten. I think I'm totally outfitted for steelhead fishing now, too!
Mom asked me, "What? Diamonds aren't a girl's best friend anymore?"
Here's the top ten reasons Diamonds aren't a girl's best friend:
10) They can't catch tuna
9) They can't catch sturgeon
8) They can't catch salmon
7) They can't catch steelhead
6) They can't keep you warm
5) They don't make your mate happy, too
4) They make your friends jealous
3) They don't float
2) They're too expensive to use as fishing lures
1) They don't look pretty all covered in tuna blood

Re: Santa likes tuna
Hey Mark,
Are those some new fancy tuna feathers I see hanging above your new gear? Just kidding.
That is a nice setup. Tuna slaying machine there. Need to see some pics when you put a few in the boat this next year.
Looks like everyone had a good christmas this year. We are all so blessed to have people in our lives that understand our sickness (some of us worse than others, I am just starting to get the symptoms, trying to fight off the worst of it).
Hope to meet more of you all this next year.
Paul B.
