Default What do you think about this reel?

I thought this might be a nice reel for retrieving my 5lb weight off the bottom at the ranch  and tuna. I was wondering what all you salty dogs thought about it? Tuna Reel

6:1 is pretty fast, makes each turn of the loaded reel pretty hard. Get the two speed! Look here!

Accurate Platinum Twindrag 12

Lot's of long range guys using these, but you can do the same with a Shimano TLD20 two speed for about 700 bucks less.

Yeah you could get the Shimano but it wont look near as cool drenched in tuna blood, and lets face it most of us are gear ho's and something that shiny is just like diamonds to a girl (insert sexist disclaimer)

Might as well buy a 345GTI and an electric motor. No pain then!

I'll second the 345Gti! I don't think 300 yds of 65lb will do it at the ranch unless it's flat and no current. The 345 will hold 450 yds of 80lb and the low profile makes a big difference when your'e just checking your bait.

Mr. F.,

If I owned that reel I'd have to get rid of my wife.

#1. I'd have to sleep with it in order to be sure nobody would steal it.

#2. There's no way she wouldn't kill me for spending that much money on a reel.

#3. Due to the tuna dissorder I have I can't own just one of anything anymore, so there would go another $1000.

Good luck. If I take you fishing will you let me use it.............good buddy?

Nice reel, but if you plan on getting it for me as a Christmas present it's too late. By the time it gets here it'll be 2003.

Myles,
You'll need a bank loan for the line! I bet it'll take 900+ yds of 65lb or 85lb spectra line.

Drifty, that better be 24K gold plating so that I can scrape it off and sell it to help pay for the outfit! Here's a nice looking motor for bigger penns: http://www.fish-ng.com/shop_cart/ent...ric_Reels.html

I have a 6:1 daiwa sealine. It works good for lighter weight stuff, but not so good for heavy stuff. I landed some coho and used it for some light bottom fishing. But when I tried to winch up a 46 inch sturgeon, it was tough. I agree with previous post that it puts a lot of load on to attempt bringing in so much line with each crank of the reel (other engineer types can probably chime in here with facts and figures). The 4+ lb weight alone would be tough. When you add a fish, I think you might be disappointed (as I was) with the high speed reel. I had the same idea, fast reel might spare the arm at the ranch and serve as a great reel for other things. I have used several other speeds and I think for the ranch I would personally stick with less than 5:1
(4:1 - 4.5:1 max). I took a serious look at the Penn 2 speeds (good quality for the price). There was a guy selling them for around $235-$250 on e-bay for a long time. I think they are the 10KG and the 15KG. I know the Accurate is an awesome reel but I think you may be dissappointed if you pick to high of gear ratio, unless you go with a 2 speed.
My .02 cents worth.
